Hi Malcolm
My name is Robert Don, I live in South Africa, we seem to have the same ancestor and have the same problem, I have traced back to George Don and Catherine MacKay no DOB for George but I have for Catherine DOB 26/04/1819, Died 04/04/1892.
Hope this helps a bit

Hi Robert and welcome to Talking Scot
What a way to make your first post on the board
If you and Malcolm share with us the information you already have the genealogical sleuths on here will do their best to come up with some answers. Their best can be pretty amazing sometimes.

The MC info from 1866 indicates that Alexander was at that time a 22 years old plumber while his father George had been a Sawyer. From the way the entry is made I'm assuming that his parents were never married. George Don Sawyer deceased and Catherine McKay is all it says. No maiden name but also no deceased for Catherine.
Best wishes

Hello Malcolm,
I had a meander through the 19C newspapers looking for anything to do with George or Alexander but couldn’t find anything useful. I did stumble across a notice in the Glasgow Herald, Wednesday, January 3, 1900, that looks suspiciously to be about one of Alexander’s daughters. A couple of words at one edge are unreadable, probable missing letters marked thus *.
HUNTER—DON. —At 142 St George’s Road, on 1st January, by the Rev. Mr Pollock, James Hunter, eldest son of the late Andrew Hunter, ***er, to Elizabeth Douglas, fourth daughter ** Alexander Don, plumber, Glasgow.
I have a GGG Uncle Fester (Sylvester) in my tree. He burned down a Ropery in Liverpool in 1824.
