Re: Laggan, Scotland - McKillop
My great, great grandfather was Alexander McKillop. He was born at Muckoul and was the illigitimate son of John Roy
McKillop and Catherine Kennedy. He was born in 1808 and married Isabella Kennedy in 1833.
John married Margaret McPherson, daughter of John McPherson and Unknown. Margaret was born about 1789 in
Kingussie, died on 15 Jun 1869 in Laggan (Muccoul, Laggan, Inverness-shire) about age 80, and was buried in St
Kenneth's RC Chapel. The cause of her death was Decay of Nature - No Medical Attendant. They had eight children:
Donald, Duncan, Elizabeth, Catherine, John, Margaret, Mary, and Ann.
In the 1851 Census he is still in Laggan.
Most of my information comes from family and friends records.
I have most details from John Roy to the presend day, but more details would be welcome.
I have made a number of visits to Laggan and surounding area, finding Margaret McPherson,s grave at St.
Kenneth's RC Chapel but no sign of John's but at some point this religion changed.
I hope this information is usfull.

Re: Laggan, Scotland - McKillop
Hi John,
From your description of the family, this looks more like the 1841 census record than the one in Drummin you have given above:
1841
Muckaul, Laggan Inverness
John McKellop, 70, born Inverness, Scotland, Ag Lab
Duncan McKellop, 25, born Inverness, Scotland
John McKellop, 20, born Inverness, Scotland
Margret McKellop, 50, born Inverness, Scotland
Mary McKellop, 18, born Inverness, Scotland
Cathron McKellop, 25, born Inverness, Scotland
Elizabeth McKellop, 30, born Inverness, Scotland
Margret McKellop, 11, born Inverness, Scotland
Cathrin McKellop, 60, born Inverness, Scotland
Maybe the Cathrin, age 60 above, could help with his birthplace, if she turned out to be his sister...
All the best,
Sarah

Where is he? I don't see him and Margaret is a widow in 1851. The only John is the one who appears with son Archibald in the censuses given above by Carol and Jean.JohnMcK wrote: In the 1851 Census he is still in Laggan.

Sorry Sarah, my error, he died in 15/21849.
I have always thought Cathrine was his sister, but cannot find any details of her.

Re: Laggan, Scotland - McKillop
Interesting thread, this is my first post so bear with me! Ault Chawain will be Ault na Chorrain (pronounced Auldoorn), across the Spey from Drummin, the present houses were built 1870-1880 but the footprints of the old steadings are still visible. There was a Ross, a shepherd in Shesgnan 2+ miles west of Drummin whose wife was a McKillop, she a Glen Roy Catholic and he a member of the Free Church, their descendants are still in Laggan. She was some connection to Mary McKillop the nun who is to be patron saint of Australia. Many of the Speyside tenants left for Australia post the famine of the 1840s, their passage paid by the Duke of Gordon. They must have been hardy folk, Drummin used to be snowed in most winters for three months, it happened this winter, first for many years.

John,
Welcome to TalkingScot.
My McKillop's are from Muckaul & Catlodge, near Laggan.
But the Drummin people may be related.
I have come to a dead end
with John Roy McKillop and have been try to find details of Cathrine (who I think is his sister).
Hoping this may lead me to his parents.
It would be great if you have any details on your McKillops to see if there is a connection.
Thanks.

Greetings fellow Kiwi.
As it is over a year since John last visited the site, you could send a personal message, through TalkingScot, to him. He may not have enabled the box, that sends off email notification, each time there is forum thread activity, A PM goes to the email address he signed on with. This you can do from the get go, so click on the [PM] under the John Mck details panel, and follow a similar procedure to posting on the public forum.
Hope you make contact.
