There is a "Public" Family Tree on Ancestry that you can view if you've paid the subscription. Be careful though, the tree says that Hector was born in Sutherland in 1838 (there is a Hector born this date in Sutherland to James and Jane Sutherland). Your Hector was Christened in Tain, Ross and Cromarty in 1839.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Finlay vs. Philip

Post by SarahND » Tue Nov 17, 2009 10:32 am

Nice work, Andy! =D> Yes, it appears that Hector and James were born in Tain and the others in Dornoch, in spite of the census below.

I have a question for everyone-- what do you think? Are Finlay and Philip the same name? I have been looking for Hector's parents in the censuses. He is a bit confused in later years about where he was born, so it took a little digging, but I believe this is the family in 1851, with the bonus of the mother-in-law to clinch it:

1851
Dornoch, Sutherland
Finlay Campbell, 40, Head, born Dornoch, Sutherland, Farmer 270 Acres
Bell Campbell, 39, Wife, born Dornoch, Sutherland
Lexy Campbell, 15, Daughter, born Dornoch, Sutherland
James Campbell, 13, Son, born Dornoch, Sutherland, Scholar
Hector Campbell, 11, Son, born Dornoch, Sutherland, Scholar
Jess Campbell, 9, Daughter, born Dornoch, Sutherland, Scholar
John Campbell, 2, Son, born Dornoch, Sutherland
Janet Grant, 80, Mother-in-law, born Dornoch, Sutherland

All well and good and as expected. But in 1841, Finlay appears to be Philip. In 1861 he is Finlay again and in 1871 Philip :!:
I had never seen these particular names being exchanged before, so wonder if the rest of you have? Or maybe he was Finlay Philip?

All the best,
Sarah

Finlay and Isabella were married in Dornoch.

There are Two Finlays born in the area:

FINLAY CAMPBELL
Male

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening: 06 AUG 1800 Rogart, Sutherland, Scotland

Parents:
Father: JOHN CAMPBELL
Mother: MARGARET MACKAY

AND

FINLAY CAMPBELL
Male

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening: 14 AUG 1812 Dornoch, Sutherland, Scotland

Parents:
Father: JAMES CAMPBELL
Mother: JANET GRAY

It's almost a dead cert the second couple are the parents.

There are also two Isabel Grants born around the same times as the Finlays, however I'm only listing ONE. I'll eat my hat if this isn't her Parents:

ISSOBELL GRANT
Female

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening: 28 SEP 1810 Dornoch, Sutherland, Scotland

Parents:
Father: HECTOR GRANT
Mother: JANET DUFF
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Hi Andy,
The second Finlay fits best with his age in the censuses also, as does Isabella's. I think you won't have to eat your hat today! :wink:

Cheers,
Sarah
