Thanks Sarah,
For clarying that! The Social Security Death Index is confusing. I was thinking that if John had worked in the USA after 1941, then he could qualify to collect and as far as I know you don't have to live in the USA to collect, but then there are all the variables! Plus, you have to allow for mistranscriptions both when the death was registered and here on Ancestry. I found that out when I tried to search for my grandfather's number which I have. Never did get his name to turn up.
Carol

Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

If you are not a U.S. citizen, but only a permanent resident, you will not be able to receive Social Security payments during the months you are out of the country (at least this is the case now). No matter how many years you spent paying into the system
I haven't seen any indication that John ever completed the naturalization process, only that he began it. And as you say, no sign of him in the SSDI unless there are some mistakes in the record.

A good look at the Detroit directories might help, if one could find them for the relevant years.
Cheers,
Sarah

Sarah...sorry, I haven't read all of the posts, but you have me a little worried here. If you are referring to normal SS retirements benefits, they will send your check by direct deposit to your bank account, providing you live in one of the reciprocal countries and the UK is one of those countries.
Regards,
Anne H

Hi all,
Ancestry just sent a message out yesterday I think it was saying that the substitue 1950 census things like directories are available now, but when I tried to open a couple of the images, I kept getting error messages so I guess they aren't quite ready for prime time! John didn't turn up in anything like that when I searched for him the other day. The only other place that I know to search would be the Detroit Public Library, but a year ago I ended up hiring someone in the area to do that for me because nothing was online at that time. Haven't checked since then.
