I'm sure there must be some wiser persons than myself on this topic around here!!! I have a GrGrGrandfather described as a Pitheadman and when I first saw it assumed it would be someone working underground perhaps at the face of the coal.....and I was very very wrong!! From googling about I learned that a pitheadman works above ground. A site that helped me visualize some mining in the early 1800's is found here:

http://home.freeuk.net/pastandpresent/chapter_iii.htm

but this account of the Bankhead disaster is even more gripping...

http://www.e-ayrshire.co.uk/local/sornw ... eadpit.htm

Thankfully my ancestor was not invoved in that!!

Best wishes
Jean

Hullo!

Since your family were linked with Bothwell, you might like to take a look at the Scottish Mining Villages site which has quite a lot of information about mining in Bothwell, as well as in other nearby villages.

Best wishes

Thanks guys, I am now having trouble finding birth certificates for William McDonald c.1888 and Alexander McDonald c.1856/7. I have tried the census records for 1861 but there is quite alot of Alexander McDonalds in Lanark. :S

Hi Andy,
What are the ages of William McDONALD & Maggie ADAMS on their 1885 Kelvin MC?
And their parents' names?

I think it is now Magaret Adamson

The parents of Alexander are: James McDonald and Margaret Reid - Possibly married around 1850.

Hi Andy,
I'm not sure if you have this marriage, and the births - from the IGI. So just in case.
Did James possibly come from the Isle of Skye?
This is the only couple in Glasgow 1851 that seems to agree in names with a son John of the right age.
I don't know where they are in 1861, and i'd have somehow expected some more children.

Thank you. Is there any other place called Broadfoot? But is this the right people? Is there any way to find out the father of James and where he was from?

There seems to be a Margaret (36-37) and Alexander (4-5) in Milton in the 1861 census. Cant view it at the mo without buying more credits.
