A real longshot....................
I noticed David Collie and Mary Thomson named one of their daughters Sarah Marchbanks Collie so I think there's a chance that Sarah Smith married George Marchbank in 1849 at Glasgow. A check at the 1851 census certainly gives a match for age and place of birth.
George Marchbank 41
Sarah Marchbank 30 born Edinburgh
Margaret Marchbank 14
William Marchbank 5
George Marchbank 3
John White 30
Looks like she died in 1870. I wonder if it's worth spending the credits in the hope that she is Mary Smith/Thomson's sister and it shows her mother's name.

Annette

Re: Links to Fade_Faed_Fead Family
Maybe a coincidence considering the name but the David Robertson Collie who married Mary Thomson was born at Edinburgh in 1830. His parents names were David Robertson Collie and Margaret Smith and her father's name was James. Margaret was born in 1807 at St Cuthberts.

Re: Links to Fade_Faed_Fead Family
Hi Annette,
Thanks for the info. It is becomming quite complicated now !!
The name David Robertson Collie runs through the family at every generation,
and causes all kinds of confusion. I have even found it in Australia.
I have DR Collie/Margaret Smith married in Edinburgh on 26 Jun 1828, but
have not gone down her family route yet. Your info will give me some leads.
Also DR Collie's elder brother John Collie, married a Caroline Ruth Smith,
Jul 1824 in Edinburgh. Her family comes from Luton, Bedfordshire.
The 1841 census info is also a good lead although I am not sure what the
statement on their whereabouts means?
There are five James Smiths married to a Marion Someone in ScotlandsPeople
for that time frame.
The Marchbanks surname is also interesting since one of the daughters of
DR Collie/Margaret Smith is called Isabella Marchbanks Collie b 1840. Gets
even more complicated because she marries a David Murray Smith in Edinburgh
in Jun 1875.
Marchbanks is/was a firm of solicitors in Edinburgh that the Collies used. Maybe
the Marchbanks name comes from there.
I think I am going to be busy again trying to piece all this info together.
Best Regards
Stuart

It means they were born at Scotland but not in the county of Midlothian.StuartC wrote:Hi Annette

Just as a wee aside you do know there is a 'Faed' surname website. Having never heard the name before your post It was very spooky while viewing a painting at Kelvingrove Art Gallery today I saw it was by Thomas Faed!

Re: Links to Fade_Faed_Fead Family
Hi Annette,
I have been into the Faed website and also been in contact with Colin Faed who put it together.
The Faed's were very prolific painters and engravers, and at the forefront of Scottish painting
at their time. Very talented family. There is even a painting, I am told, in the Brisbane,Queensland
Museum for which they paid a lot of money.
I found Margaret (Smith) Collie death cert today (9 Jul 1866, Edinburgh), and it gives her parents
as James Smith and Margaret Little, which is a bit off from the 1841 census that would suggest
her mother was a Marion Someone.
Her OPR marriage cert (12 Jun 1828) gives her address as 15 South College Street. Same as Mary Smith,
and James Smith! I guess they are all one and the same family.
Best regards
Stuart

Was Margaret's father's occupation given as a tailor?StuartC wrote:Hi Annette,

Marion could have been a second wife or a sister.

Hi Annette,
Yes, his occupation was given as Tailor. It is amazing how many Smiths there are that
are also Tailors.
I also thought about Marion as being a second wife or even sister, but have not found her yet
Also Margaret Little seems to be elusive also.
Noticed in some of the indexes that there are umpteen ways to spell Margaret !
