Re: Marjory McLaren Mystery
I did have a look on the 1930 US census with only one possibility found - but it seemed a little unlikely as both the Marjory (spelt on the Census Margery) and her husband are listed as arriving in the same year - 1921 - but you might find it worth a look
If you search for Margery (no surname) born Scotland - birth year 1891 +/- 2 - I think it is the only one - from Michigan if I remember correctly. She & husband appeared to be in service and she was listed as a Cook - is this possible? It also said years since first married 20 - which would be c. 1910 - but whether to the current husband?

Re: Marjory McLaren Mystery
Hi all,
The question in the 1930 census was about the first marriage, not the current one, so that would fit.
Her husband in 1930, James S Peters, says his father was born in Germany, which helps greatly to find what looks like him in Scotland in 1901:
1901
West Balmirmer Cottage, Arbirlot, Angus
James Peters, 25, Head, born British Subject, Germany, Ploughman
Sophia Peters, 25, Wife, born Montrose, Forfarshire
Hellen Peters, 5, Daur, born Newtile, Forfarshire
James Peters, 3, Son, born Inverkeilor, Forfarshire
Jessie Peters, 2, Daur, born Inverkeilor, Forfarshire
David Peters, 1m, Son, born Arbirlot, Forfarshire
Not fitting age-wise with the above, but more or less fitting the age on the 1930 census, James S Peters, born 1 Jun 1893 in Scotland, died in 1962 in San Diego, California, but I don't see Margery's death there.
Nor do I find James' arrival in 1921... but maybe someone else will have better luck.
There are two Marj* born 12 July 1891 in the Social Security Death Index. One with surname Kauffman, who died in Ohio, and the other with surname Morgan, who died in Michigan-- (but who may well be the person of the same name in 1930, born in Michigan). I don't think either of these are your Marjory and there are none spelled Margery or other variants except many Margarets.
All the best,
Sarah

Re: Marjory McLaren Mystery
Hi Trish and Sarah
Many thanks for that record in the 1930 US census, Trish, which looked so promising. It seemed to be such a good fit until I did a search of James S Peters. From what I found, he is James Smart Peters, born 1893 in Dundee to Tobias Peters and Helen Smart. He married Marjory (Marjorie, Margery) Ellen Lawsin with whom he emigrated to America in 1921.
Many thanks, too, Sarah for all your research. As mentioned above, I did find a passsenger record for him in 1921 on Ancestry. This James Smart Peters, born 1893 in Dundee, is the one who died in 1962 in San Diego.
Coincidentally, I received a private message yesterday from someone who is a descendant of yet another child of Duncan and Sarah McLaren I didn't know about -- notably Catherine Scott McLaren (b 1893). Apparently, she had a relative in Canada who was known as 'Mollie', of whom he has a photo. He asked if this Mollie could possibly be my Marjory but no one knows her surname. I know that Mollie is a pet name for Mary but is it also a nickname for Marjory? I now wonder if Marjory emigrated to Canada from New York.
Again, many thanks to you both.
Cheers,
Rodeo

Re: Marjory McLaren Mystery
Hi all,
Larchmont, NY is in Westchester County, NY. If you Google Westchester, NY genealogy you'll find the website for the NYgenweb site for Westchester genealogy. Might be able to find out if Marjory remarried or died while in Larchmont.
I would have given you the link, but for some reason my computer wouldn't let me copy and paste this morning. Probably operator error again...
