Wow Carol

That was inspired searching. :D :D

Ancestry seem to have as many problems with surnames as they have with place names :?

Hello,
Thank you so much Alan, Annette and Carol for your interest and your help. I'm now sure that Thomas was an only child and that Elizabeth had siblings. Our family history does not indicate any reference to John or Agnes so it would be nice to know if she remained in contact with them. That will require further research. I also see that on the '61 Scottish census Elizabeth is not listed so perhaps she was living elsewhere as a servant.
Carol, as Russell says, you did a great job of finding the Hetherington family under such a bungled transcription. Bravo!
Again, I am most appreciative of the time you spent to help me.
Best regards,
Cein

Hi all,

Always glad to help out if I can! My own family name Clerihew has over thirty different spellings in the transcriptions so I've had lots of practice digging out the real thing!

Carol :D
Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

Now officially spelt with eight letters but OVER thirty translation - transcribing spellings found !

PHEW :o

Maybe I should be thankful for just being SHARP / E unless the hand writing is very poor. Gives perspective to my woes re, my lack of finding needed documentation.

Alan SHARP.

Hi Alan,

Yes, and I thought having an unusal name would make it easier! The latest is Carichner. I have been hunting my grandfather's brother John Clerihew on the 1930 census since I started this search in 2007. I even knew right about where he was living, but no luck so I figured that he was just one of those people the census missed. Then a few weeks ago I ran the search for him again and there he was. Someone in Canada researching a different line of Clerihews had found great uncle John listed as Carichner and sent a correction to Ancestry. The original is very readable and says Clerihew. Either the optical scanner didn't like the handwriting or someone made a serious mistake! Anyway, never give up! These records are changing all the time.
