Right. Think I have located where it was and hopefully still is. At worst I'll get a picture of the old church at Kinkell which is very close. When I have a chance will take a wander along there and try to get photos and will pm you to arrange to send once I have them. Not sure where Banffshire comes in to it!! :P

Hi Anne

James Reids OPR birth in Keithall and Kinkell says:

Reid April 15th 1815 Robert Reid and Jane Hosach in Heatherwick had a son named James baptised.

I have located in SP a birth OPR for a Robert Reid born 1785 to a James Reid in Newtonley? in Dunnotar Parish. A marriage record is also found in the same Parish for a James Reid and Annie Laurence 1781.

Googled Dunnotar, and it tells me that it is in Aberdeenshire. Do you think I could be on the right track?

I am extremely careful of making sure the areas are correct after being "informed" that I had an incorrect connection due to the fact that Midlothian was a long way from the Foveran area, for other branches. The other branches of Gordons, Connons, and Ritchies, from Foveran, Belhelvie, and Craithie have been easier to trace..but these Reids are time and patience !! Hence the appreciation of everybodys help.

Dunottar is only in Aberdeenshire for very recent years (since 1996?). For the years we can see documents for on ScotlandsPeople it was in Kincardineshire.

All the best,

There appears to be a Marine Death on ScotlandsPeople for a James Todd in 1899. Probaly won't give much information. I have a Consular Return for a death at sea for 1931 and it basically just gives the persons name, occupation, claim to British nationality and where died.

Hi there

See this link

Unfortunately no good outside shots but will take a picture myself when I have a chance.

Anne

BTW How is Jane Hosach's name spelled on James's death certificate in 1881. Is it Hosach, Hossack or Hosie or similar.

Ahhhhhh Anne, you have hit the nail on the head !!!! @ Hosach, Hosack or Hosie.

On the birth OPR for James it is spelt Hosach BUT I think I have found her death cert in SP and that says her maiden name is Hosie and her parents spelt the same way. The death cert also calls her Jane whereas I have her as Jean from James birth OPR but it does say she is the widow of Robert Reid. I dont have a copy yet of James Death certificate I dont think. I need more SP credits haha. Pay day tomorrow....Thank you so much for the thought of taking photos for me. Truely nice of you and I do appreciate it...

To Eric, Andrew and Alan..thanks heaps for your info. Kincardineshire is south of Aberdeenshire? Banffshire is north of Aberdeenshire?. Trying to grasp the geography of your counties is not easy LOL.

Hello,
If you're unfamiliar with the locations of the counties, the GENUKI site can be helpful. If you go here, http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/#Counties

you'll see that numbers 7, 8 and 9 are Banffshire, Aberdeenshire and Kincardineshire respectively.

Hope this helps!

Kincardineshire is south of the eastern part of Aberdeenshire and Banffshire is west of Aberdeenshire. Click on the link below for a map of the Scottish counties in the 1880s.

Hi there and pardon for asking but if you have not seen James's death certificate and both his marriages were before statutory registration, how do you know the names of his parents?

There appear to be 2 James Reids born Keithhall in 1815 or 1816. One is your James and the other appears to be a ploughman who seems to disappear after 1861. I can't find an obvious death for him.

A Robert Reid and Jean Hossie marry in St Nicholas in 1803. Have you seen that record? Do you think that is the same couple?
