Hi Alan

It must be reassuring that its not you or your poor old, hand-cranked computer. It still serves you well. :) there is one very twitchy fingered ADMIN on the other side of the world trying every possible route to get onto TalkingScot but failing miserably (that describes my state of mind too  )
Andrew is working on the problem but it is intermittent but affecting just about everybody.

Working on: Oman, Brock, Miller/Millar, in Caithness.
Roan/Rowan, Hastings, Sharp, Lapraik in Ayr & Kirkcudbrightshire.
Johnston, Reside, Lyle all over the place !
McGilvray(spelt 26 different ways)
Watson, Morton, Anderson, Tawse, in Kilrenny

On FreeBMD for England-Wales there are about 14 Aldra births between 1890 and 1948, and about 8 births with Aldra as a middle name between 1889 and 1907.

Aldra is a Norwegian island. “An etymological dictionary of the Scottish language” published 1808, has a reference under ALLER to Aldra being used in the Swedish language as a note of the superlative. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=H6A ... ra&f=false

Hi Alan

I hadn't looked at England - need to think outside the square - especially as one branch of the family had some photos taken in Lancashire - I shall check them out. I had googled & noticed the Norwegian island but not your Aller definition - I note it also says - den aldrasakraste flicka - the most beautiful girl. One problem I do have is that at the minute I only know the married name of my Aldra - hopefully freebdm (or the later gro indexes) might provide some possible marriages.

many thanks

Trish

It is thought that one of them probably died in the late 1980s but the name given is "Aldra". I haven't yet seen the letters but being impatient have been searching SP for possible records.

I had thought Aldra may be a name for an Alexandra, but none of the appropriate death records seem to fit. Any suggestions for other name options (female names) for someone known as Aldra would be appreciated.

Apologies for quoting myself - but to mention my Aldra IS an Alexandra. I had believed her own story in relation to "not being long for this earth" but she outlived her thoughts, so with the help of a "modern times certificate" I found her.

Now, of course, I am interested in the name Aldra & want to find out if anyone with such a name is related to my family - or did it start as a child's inability to say the longer name?

many thanks again for the ideas.

Trish
