Hi Daryl,
On looking further into this family group, I think we could well be looking at the wrong family. The marriage certificate for David Bruce and Mary Shirrat says that she is the daughter of Graham Shirrat (reputed father) and Margaret Tevendale, ms. Hanton.
The 1851 census shows Mary Sherit (Sheret?) age 3, with her grandmother Margaret Hanton. The 1861 census shows Mary Shiret, age 14, a boarder in the Walker household.
The various censuses of James Tavendale and Mary Tavendale (Ms Hampton) have children both older and younger than Mary. So I have my doubts that this is the right family group for your Mary Shirrat. Also James and Mary were married in 1842, and Mary was born about 1848.
More food for thought,
AndrewP

Hi Andrew,
Yes I agree that the Mary who died in Montrose isn't the one I'm looking for unfortunately.
Back to SP & FS then
I thought I found a Graham Shiret in the 1851 census aged 23 yrs who was a mason,
but can't seem to find him in later census's. I also found the same entry for a Mary Shiret living with her grandmother aged 3 yrs.
I wonder why she wasn't living with her mother ? will have another look
Regards,
Daryl

Re: Graham Sheritt & Mary Hampton/Tavendale
Hi,
I've found another couple of death certificates that may be Alexander & Margaret.
Alexander Tevendale died 27 Jan 1891 aged 69 in St.Nicholas, Aberdeen, according to his certificate he was married to Margaret Hanton. His son George Tevendale was the informant on the cert.
Margaret Tevendale died 7 Jan 1898 aged 72 yrs also St. Nicholas, Aberdeen in 1898. The informant on her cert was Alexander Robertson, her grandson. There is an entry on the side that says something like
see reg of corrected entries, vol ?? p.88 ? & January 18 1898.
If Margaret's 2nd husband Alexander had died in 1891, wouldn't he be mentioned on Mary Shirret's death cert in 1892 ? And of course I cant find a marriage for Margaret & Alex, apart from figuring out that she must have married about 1849 onwards as she had children from 1850.
Any thoughts ?
Daryl

Daryl,
If you get an extract with with an RCE notatation in the left column you can download that section for a small amount extra -2 credits I think - from SP. It may only give a small amount of further information, or it may confirm the cause of death.
Best wishes,
Meg

Hi Daryl,
You've been busy.
That Margaret certainly looks likely as she was born at Brechin.
What were the parents names given on her death entry?
Regards,
Annette
