I don't think they were married either Carol. I wonder if one of them was already married and estranged from their partner so could not marry.
Daryl, since John died leaving Janet with a few children I think there is a good chance there will be a poorhouse application.

Annette

Re: John Munro - Cant Find His Marriage
There is this interesting family in 1851 at Rosskeen -
Donald Munro 68 Chelsea Pensioner, born Nigg
Elizabeth Munro 50 born Kilmuir
Ann Munro 18
Hugh Munro 15
John Munro 8
and this in 1861 -
John Munro
Age: 17
Estimated birth year: abt 1844
Relationship: Servant
Gender: Male
Where born: Rosskeen, rossshire
Registration Number: 81
Registration district: Rosskeen
Civil Parish: Rosskeen
County: Ross and Cromarty
Address: Dalniach
Occupation: Ploughman
ED: 2
Household schedule number: 70
LINE: 22
Roll: CSSCT1861_10
Household Members:
Name Age
George Fraser 67
Margaret Fraser 69
Elizabeth Mclean 82 Pauper, born Lochbroom
Margaret Munro 20

I'm not suggesting that Elizabeth McLean is his mother but maybe grandmother???

Re: John Munro - Cant Find His Marriage
I think this is Janet with new husband James Thomson, Riveter on the 1891 Census:
Name:
James Thomson
Age:
46
Estimated birth year:
abt 1845
Relationship:
Head
Spouse's name :
Janet Thomson
Gender:
Male
Where born:
Govan, Renfrewshire
Registration Number:
644/2
Registration district:
Camlachie
Civil Parish:
Glasgow Chalmers
County:
Lanarkshire
Address:
8 Lochiel St
Occupation:
Rivetter
Household Members:
Name
Age
James Thomson 46
Janet Thomson 45
John Thomson 16
Robert Thomson 14
David Thomson 5
The copy and paste didn't work too well, but the info is there. I haven't found a marriage for them. Notice that John and Robert now have Thomson instead of Munro for last names.

Re: John Munro - Cant Find His Marriage
Hi Carol & Annette,
Thank you so much for finding all that info regarding John.
I've spent most of today at the genealogy centre in Glasgow and found some certs & info on John and his family. I found exactly the same record for the 1891 census for
Janet and hubby no.2 James also the 1851 & 1861 census too. I tried to find the deaths for Donald & Elizabeth but couldn't find them. They were both still alive when John died in 1882.
Janet Munro remarried in 1884 to James Thomson in the Gorbals, and she died in 1933 in Garngadhill. Again, I tried to find her husband's death, but without success.
All of Janet's children with John Munro were illegitimate as there is no evidence of a marriage cert. John & Janet's son Donald drowned in 1890 whilst building the Dalmarnock bridge in Glasgow he was 19 yrs old. I couldn't find what happened to Robert unfortunately.
John was born on 7 Apr 1842 in Rosskeen, Ross & Cromarty to Donald & Elizabeth, and was baptised on 2 May. Again, no marriage was found for Donald & Elizabeth.
I found Janet's birth for 15 June 1844 in Buckhaven, Fife to Robert & Ann Brown (subsequently Eckford). (These names were on her marriage & death cert)
My brain is frazzled at looking at those certs, I'll look at the poor relief records next time I'm in the Mitchell.
Thanks again,
Daryl

Re: John Munro - Cant Find His Marriage
Daryl,
Have you done any work on John's brothers and sisters? I found the family on the 1851 Census. Ann b. 1833, Hugh b. 1836. Hugh marries Martha Ross on August 29, 1862. This cert is hard to read once again, but Hugh's father Donald is clearly marked Dec. and I think his mother Elizabeth Mclean is also marked Dec. but that one is hard to read. The marriage took place in Edderton, Ross. They had had their first child Jessie illegitimately on June 29, 1862, but there is a RCE on the certificate saying she was legitimate due to the subsequent marriage of her parents. Jessie was born in Edderton. Hugh and Martha can be found on the 1871, 1881, and 1891 or 1901 Census records? I've looked at so many I'm getting confused!
Elizabeth Mclean Munro was born in Kilmuir, Ross about 1801. Donald Munro was born in Nigg, Ross in 1783 so he was about 18 years older than Elizabeth. I haven't found either of them on the 1861 Census so I think they were both deceased by then.
Carol
Forgot to mention that Hugh was a widower on his marriage cert in 1862.

Re: John Munro - Cant Find His Marriage
Hi Carol,
Thanks for finding that info on John's siblings.
Yes, I had a quick look for possible marriages for both Ann & Hugh, and I had a quick look for the deaths of Donald & Elizabeth while I was in the genealogy centre but ran out of time.
According to John's death cert in 1882 his parents are both still alive (or at least there isn't anything to indicate they were deceased). If his father was still alive he would have been really old 80+ yrs old, would be fairly easy to find a possible death in either Rosskeen or Glasgow. I'll check the census's for Hugh & Martha, what was his occupation ? were they in Glasgow ?
Thanks again.

Daryl

Re: John Munro - Cant Find His Marriage
On the 1862 marriage cert for Hugh and Martha they were in Edderton at Ardmore?--a farm I think. Hugh was a Farm Servant. In 1871, they were still in Edderton and Hugh was an Ag. Lab. In 1881, they were in Kilmuir Easter at Priest Hill and Hugh was a Farm Servant. In 1891, they were in Kilmuir Easter, Fearn district, Rhynie Farm and Hugh was a Ploughman. If you search the census records for Hugh Munro, b. 1836 with Martha as his spouse's name, the listings should come right up.
I also found Donald and Elizabeth and family on the 1841 Census. They are at Rosskeen, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. The farm is Riesk or maybe that's a village. There is an older daughter with them, Margaret, age 16, b. 1825. Unfortunately, the 1841 Census doesn't specify a birthplace other than Ross and Cromarty. Ann is 10 and Hugh is 6.
