Well....Annette, Isobel, and Sally......looks like we gave it our best effort...but there'll be no winning on this one. I now have the official transciption of the OPR marriage...and as I feared....
"Thomas Phillips and Helen Watts both of this parish were regularly proclaimed for Marriage this day and were married on the 22 November by Mr. Jaffray."
No parent confirmation there....and with the highly suspect but nevertheless stated DC father's name of
George PHILLIPS and Marion(Mary, May) FAIN/FANE/FAIM/TAIN....we're disqualified from the running.
Pity....I thought we were onto something big....but I sincerely do appreciate everyones assist on this one. Couldnae do it wi' ye but Ah couldnae doon it wi'oot ye either
Thanks everyone!
Jean

Just joined talking scots and came across this exchange from some time ago. My great grandfather, RObert Robertson married Agnes Phil(l)ips, daughter of Alexander Philips, a seaman, and Marion Fain. Can't find many other Fain's in the area about this time though.

Hi Ann
Glad to see you on the forum!
Wow......I thought this thread was dead and buried.

I have to re-read it all again and try and recall what I think we thought we had found
At any rate...the reason I was investigating the PHILLIPS line is that they married into a distant branch of mine and that couple came to the US very early 1900's. I've had contact with living relatives from that couple but not for over a year now. Not sure of their status at this point. I guess that makes you some kind of very very very removed removed removed distant cousin of mine by marriage.....doesn't it
Howdy cuz!
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean
Thanks for the warm welcome. I guess we are kinda related then.
I'm going to take a trip round some East Lothian graveyards soon andcheck out headstones. I'll also pop into the local history centre at Haddington, where my daughter lives, because they are very helpful and I may be able to pick up some Fain, and Philips clues there. Incidentally, my brother's middle name is Philips - definitely spelt with one L.
Agnes died around 1902, and one of her daughtesr was called Marion. Marion was born in 1862 but in the 1881 census she was not living with the rest of the family, but in lodgings with a friend and they both recorded themselves as 'Actress'. Don't think I ever heard of an actress called Marion Robertson. Another trail gone cold because I don't know whether she left Scotland for fame and fortune ( a bit early for Hollywood I would have thought) or just settled down and married.
Anyway, I spend many happy hours 'looking for dead people' as my grandchildren put it. I just tell them 'its when I start to talk to them that you should worry'.
Chhers

Well its certainly been a warm welcome. And having read through all the Philips / Fain stuff info again I need to have a closer look at some of the information I have.
