Hi Jean,

Many thanks for the explanation :D .

Actually, I now feel like an idiot since both the BIVRI and 1881 Census discs have been sitting in front of me for the past couple of years  . I think I might just pop them in and see what I can find...didn't have too much success in finding my family when I first bought them and haven't used them since although I did have a little success with the 1881 census. Again, many thanks!

Regards,
AnneH

Hi Anne H.

No prob at all! I had the same thing happen to me....none of my own family were in the BIVRI....but I figure if mine aren't there these people have to belong to someone!! It makes for a nice feeling to find information that is valuable to someone else :D !!

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,

You're right - it is a nice feeling to be of help to others! I should use them a bit more often maybe I'll be able to help someone else.

Regards,
AnneH

Your post looked interesting, and I didn't have this particular Hotchkiss line, so I researched it a bit. Based on this research, James is the son of John Hotchkiss and Margaret Anderson. See more at http://www.hotchkissclan.org/gen/Record ... I5464.html. Do you have any more like this that isn't on my Hotchkiss site? I'd appreciate anything related to any Hotchkiss.

Hi Rex,
A warm welcome to TalkingScot!
The 1851 & 1861 are from census indexes, so i don't know if they are transcription errors,
or that this is what was actually written for the names on the original pages. [see ps]
Could John Hotchkiss as 6yrs in 1841 be actually 6mos?

Ken, your Colin STEWART 33 & Helen 27 in 1861 are just previous on Ed 24 p 8.
They have children, Janet 8, Jane 6, Duncan 4, Colin under 1.

Jack
ps later, i've had a wee look at the original pages.
1851 - looked like HOTCHKIN; at a pinch it might be HOTCHKIS.
1861 - very clear as ASKIE.

That is a very good catch on John in 1841. Yes it is months. The words "(months)" is written in parenthesis in very small letters in the next box under John, but could not go with the man there who is the next head of household.

I'll take a closer look at those two new census entries you found.

I looked at the two new census entries and I have to agree that they are the correct people. I think that ScotlandsPeople has mis-transcribed the 1851 one. To my eyes that last name written looks like Hotchkis, with one "s" rather than an "n". The name is actually only written once with the rest as "Do". So, filling in the dittos, the entry reads pretty much like this. Did I get the QS Parish and Town or Village anywhere near right?

!Source: http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
1851 census 625 (655) Ed 23 p 4 (Bothwell)
Quod Sacr Parish of Holgtown?, Town or Village of Chapelhall?
James Hotchkis 54, Coal Miner, b Stirlingshire, Larbert
Janet Hotchkis 44, , b Stirlingshire, Larbert
Robert Hotchkis 19, Coal Miner, b Lanarkshire, O(ld) Monkland
John Hotchkis 10, Day School, b Lanarkshire, O(ld) Monkland
Michael Hotchkis 7, Day School, b Stirlingshire, Ruthven
James Hotchkis 3, , b Lanarkshire, Bothwell

I think you got the 1861 Askie exactly right. It is much harder to find those when they are really refering to Hotchkiss. Good find.

By the way, I have found that the best Soundex for Hotchkiss is actually "Hodgkis". It usually finds nearly all of the spellings, but leaves out names like Askie which usually aren't the same name. A follow up of an exact search for Hot* will sometimes find any that were missed.

Hi rex

Quite a few of them right but............

Parish of Holytown
Old Monkland is in Lanarkshire

I thought Ruthven was in Angus, but perhaps back then it was in Stirling.

Glad to see your research is progressing

Best wishes

Catriona

Sorry about that mis-type on Lanarkshire. The editor I actually typed the reply in was trying to be "helpful". I corrected it.

The writing on that one was definitely not the clearest, but it looks like it says Sterlingshire to me. Whether it was correct or not is another matter.
