hi everyone, thankyou so much i am totally overwhelmed with the response and efforts you have all made for me , have recommended you to many today so be prepared.
as for james yes i was aware of him in maker cornwall and the children since it was also the birth place of my grandmother and mother, the dewars welmans and then hardings are all linked to our history. james dewar married jane brown at least thats the name we have, as for the glenn introduction i really have no record of that from the cornish side so again i have to assume that it is scottish, and since the birth date now alters slightly is that going to make a difference to his parentage? maybe john and christian are not his parents after all ,can anyone do a lookup please? 1776, sterling.
these dewars really are complicated but with all of you helping i know we will get there.
congratulations on such a fantastic site and for the wonderful welcome you give to others not to mention the help.

Krissy,

I've been having a look at the Airth graveyards MI's [ published by the Falkirk Local History Society]

Stone 170 is:
1786 JOHN:DEW__/ CRISTIAN:DRWMMOND.

The vast majority of the stones are too far gone to yield any clues.

Sorry Krissy - that's all there seems to be :(

After 200 odd years that little bit has done well to survive. The majority of the stones around it are blank now.

Krissy

The surviving part of the MI -

"1786 JOHN:DEW__/CRISTIAN:DRWMMOND."

can have a number of meanings.

1. In 1786 John DEW[AR] and Christian DRUMMOND [assumed to be his wife] both died

2. In 1786 John DEW[AR] husband of Christian DRUMMOND died [if it read husband that should mean she was still alive at the date of the description but you can't rely on it!; if she wasn't he should really be described as the "relict of" but that doesn't always happen either.]

3. In 1786 a gravestone was erected to the memory of John DEW[AR] and Christian DRUMMOND [assumed to be his wife] who had both died in 1786 or earlier.

Give me a day or two and I mught be able to think up one or more further alternative explanations!

While the gravestone was normally erected within weeks of the interment, it's not unusual to find a situation where the children, say, erect the stone a few years later, perhaps when they've put the money together; perhaps when the second parent died and their consciences were stirred by the fact that they had never got round to putting up a stone to the first parent......

You'll find that many genealogical researchers are avid readers of detective novels !!!...........

Another theory is that when the lair was purchased a stone was erected at the same time, dates of death to be added after the events !

hi wilma, hi david,
thanks for the replies, the reason i questioned it was that according to lds site john and christian were still alive in 1794 when they had thier last son andrew so i was wondering if perhaps the stone was for a child of theirs as there was a son george born in 1876 as yet cant find evidence of a death but maybe ,or the lds have got it way out, there were question marks over the children as 3 were born in torryburn fife the rest in airth i know this is not uncommon but this whole family are a bit confusing,
i really do appreciate your help in this as i have been climbing walls trying to confirm that my grt grt grt grt grandfather james is linked to this family
:?
look forward to hearing from you both with any further suggestions
