Hi Rab
Nae probs - it me... just not on the ball! :-s
It did seem a bit too much of a coincidence! But then these things happen sometimes.... a bit like buses, none for ages, then three at the same time!

best wishes
Lesley

Hi Rab

There is only one problem when one makes a discovery as outstanding as yours and that is there are simply never enough people on the planet to tell! After you've exhausted the family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, people at the bus-stop  , coffee shop regulars..... yikes! I'm becoming a genealogy-tragic  .

Excellent find, congrats and thanks for sharing and for the google earth tip - hadn't thought of that one  .

 You are exactly right. When I first made the find I turned to my wife and before I could even open my mouth she said "Is this to do with your family tree?". When I nodded she pointed at the TV and said "Well I'm watching this so you can tell me after." In the excitement it's easy to forget that not everyone is as interested as yourself. It was OK though because I got straight on the phone and pestered my brother. :D

that's a great result, a really interesting piece of family history =D>

A word of caution though..
Be careful when sharing info.. I recently discovered that my gr grandfather's brother was a bit of a rogue around the 1870's.
Foolishly I showed the trial records to my wife (in one case he got eighteen months in Duke street Jail for stealing a pair of trousers).
What did I get ... my leg pulled because of my criminal background... I even got a stripey jumper for my Christmas :?

Oh... and I think she has started sleeping with her purse under the pillow

   I'll watch who I tell. No skeletons in the cupboard have been unearthed yet which I should possibly be thankful for but to be honest I'm a bit disappointed about. I'm begining to wonder if my family ever "lived". :)

18 months though for taking a pair of trousers. That would be enough to keep most on the straight and narrow. My mum was brought up living in Duke Street at various houses. Her dad was a prison officer there. That was in the 1950s though so I don't think our ancestors would have crossed paths.

 Maybe get a lesser stretch for a pair of drainpipes. ;)

Quick update on this one about the places I've contacted:
  1. University of Glasgow Archive Very nice of them to do a search for free on my behalf and when I'm a bit more flush. They DA searched the "Wylie & Lochhead" records but Hugh was not to be found.
  2. The Mitchell I enquired as to which records held there might give me a bit more insight. They sent back saying that I should contact the NAS about fatal accident records but that they didn't think the records went back as far as 1843. I now know from searching that they don't so that's a dead end.
Each breakthrough takes a while so I'm not giving up yet. With a little luck I'll hopefully find another nugget- however greedy that may be. :)
