Hi Denny
I did have a look at a marriage for an Ann Angus which looked likely and one of the three births for James in Edinburgh which looked a possible but I can understand how, with the the numbers of records to check, you could end up spending a lot ...and getting nowhere. I did wonder if perhaps James' birth had been registered as Reid, that being the name that was given for his father, but usually if children are illegitimate they seem to be indexed under both names anyway, and really Reid is not any improvement on the situation at all as there are lots of them too!

Sorry I couldn't come up with anything more positive. I do hope you manage to find something on James' birth and find out what became of Ann. Maybe someone else here will come up with something.
Best wishes
Lesley

Ann Angus

Denny

On the subject of Ann Angus I've got one in my tree which might help you rule one out if you use the SP site.

My Ann Angus married James Ross in St Cuthbert's. Edinburgh on 26 Oct 1826. Both Ann and James were dead by about 1847. They had 3 children that I know of born between 1827 and 1830 in Edinburgh. This may be of no use to you but who knows ..... ?

Unfortunately, I've not done any more searching on this part of my family as they are actually Step relations and not direct blood relations! I will return to them at some time.

Best of luck finding your Ann.

Liz

Hello to all those who have been kind enough to try to help and for all your suggestions :D

This might be of some help to those out there also searching. I contatced the "Lothians Health Service Archive" their site is www.nlm.nih.gov and if you have info. about somebody in one of the hospitals in the Lothian catchment area the people there have archvied the details, and are very very helpful.

I had a paper, very unsure about it, detailing grandfathers birth in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (all the details in earlier post!) They kindly checked the archives and found he had definately been born there, his mother as listed and so on even the time 8.00am 4th Jan 1868. So thanks to them :D at least I now know I definately have the right family.

For some reasons he still seems not to have an actual birth cert., under any name which they also found strange!! Have now checked all the Ann Angus' I can find in SP, but no luck there, I think aliens must have taken her and that's the same for the named father!!

Oh well I'll keep looking! Anybody out there have any knowledge of the "boarder" situation for children in those days?

Good luck to everyone else out there hunting.

Denny

Is it possible that she gave a false name when giving Birth I know this used to happen in days gone by to spare the shame of the unwed Mother.
Maybe he was informally adopted by the Petersons.
I don't know what the penalty was for failing to register a birth but with the documentation from the hospital he can at least prove where he was born.
No maternal Deaths which might explain a grieving family's failure to register the birth.
Who were the step-brothers though? Maybe she gave Birth using her maiden name but was actually Married at the time -have you checked for an earlier Marriage.?
Still very mysterious but I am sure their will a simple explination for it.
