The 1851 census isn't available on SP, is it ? Where would I find it ?

John Sanaghan

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the tip about the churches in Bothwell. I'll try writing to them.
I did correspond with a lady from the Catholic Archives in Glasgow, she suggested St. Marys in Hamilton, but no joy there.
The three children born after John were all in Legbrannock, Bothwell, so the churches you mentioned are worth contacting. You were right about the parents originating from Tyrone. They were married in Dungannon sometime in the 1840's. There is a different month and year on each child's birth cert. Eddendork was written on one, is that significant ?

Hi Susie,
You may have this? It's from an index, so no more details.
If the name IS as below, then *wildcards* might be needed to find them in the 1861 census on Scotlandspeople.
Were John & Agnes in Scotland by 1851? Can't at the moment see them in Lanarkshire then.

Agnes 35, b Tyrone, Ireland

Hello Jack,

Thank you, yes, I do have that info. It was passed on to me a while ago by another generous soul. I've no idea when John & Agnes came to Lanarkshire. The earliest certificate I have is a birth in 1855, ( Michael )
If John was born in 1850, then they would be in the 1851 census, but how do you access it ?

Hi Susie,
The 1851 should be online soon....
I'd been looking at the 1851 census CD index published by the Lanarkshire FHS.

I can see only one "SANACHAN" in 1851 Lanarkshire - probably staying with a Charles & Catherine MALOY.
Yes, this below is how his name is indexed.

Hi Jack,

Think you might have something there, Owen is a Sanaghan family name ! He could have been a brother sent over to scout things out before the rest of the family came over, or is that too fanciful ?

Hi Susie,
In Family History, nothing is too fanciful
Maybe he just came over himself looking for work, then sent word back that there was plenty employment?
