Thanks Annette, looks like you were right Catriona, I have just found out that Janet, Jean, Thomas, and Thomas were Roberts siblings, I'm thinking the first Thomas must have died for them to name the other Thomas, but up to now have been unable to find a record. Jack I did find a marriage for Mary Donaldson and Andrew Hill, but with no parents listed don'y know for sure if its her?

Hi Julie

Did you find the marriage of Andrew and Mary on the IGI or on ScotlandsPeople (See button at top of the page) ? Marriages after 1855 are to be found on SP and they usually give information about both sets of parents.

Glad you've already quite a bit of new information.

Best wishes

Catriona

Thanks Catriona, I did find the marriage on IGI, I can't believe how much help I have recieved already on this site you are all so friendly :) I have only been researching my tree since November 2005, the Donaldson name comes from my fathers paternal side, I have traced my mothers family maternal and paternal back to the 1851 census they were all from Yorkshire England, I have yet to start on my fathers maternal side yet. Hi again Julie,
Sorry, i should've explained better.
As Catriona mentioned, you'd need to check the marriage on ScotlandsPeople to see who Mary's parents were.
Likewise for a possible death if it is your Mary who wed Andrew Bell.
If the right Mary, then it should be a narrow window to find a DC (1858-1861).

Alas, it is a paysite - http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

And always the slim chance that Andrew has deserted Mary and she was still living in 1861....
(though i'd only suspect this if i couldn't find a DC within those years)
But i'm jumping too far ahead - the 1857 marriage needs checked first.
After all this i hope it is her! But i suppose the MC would need to be looked at at one point - even if just for elimination purposes.
Jack

Hello Julie

Have a look at Death in Dunfirmaline Fife for Mary in 1886 it says she was first married to Andrew Hill, then to James McGregor on DC she is Mary McGregor and it gives her parents as Robert Donaldson and Margaret Hough. She was 51.

Use a female cross check of Hill/Donaldson, I used a longer timeframe than 1861 I used 1858 to 1935.

Oh! I forgot to add if this is her the informant was Jessie Donaldson (sister).

Yes you were right Stew, I have just found the death on SP, 1886 Mary Mcgregor, Hill, and her parents were Robert Donaldson and Margaret Heugh. With the name Mcgregor now added to my tree I'm feeling a little bit more Scottish  Thanks again, Julie.

Hi Julie,
Thanks goes to Stewie for finding Mary (DONALDSON) HILL's 1886 DC!
I take it that it is your Mary who wed Andrew HILL in 1857, and you've now found her in the 1861/1871 censuses.
I shouldn't have been too hasty in thinking that the Andrew HILL on the 1881 census was Mary's hubby.
(if i'd been searching the records at Park Circus or NRH i'd soon have discovered how very wrong i was!)
But so pleased you've now found out what happened to Mary.
Jack
ps, you may have these - looks like Mary in 1881, and a possible for sister Jessie? But don't take my word on them...!

Hello all

We all know about the female surname crosscheck on SP, but could this qualify as a triple crosscheck    When I did the crosscheck obviously I had no idea of the other name. Search was based on the possibility that she did not die on the earlier date and had remarried.
Pity I didnt have such luck with my own line looking for births
