Hi Pandabean

For William Ross, his mothers surname looks like Hosie, but not 100% sure. Cause of death looks like "Hypertrophy of the heart 4 months"

For Ann (Stevenson) Ross, mothers surname is Adams. For cause of death it looks like "intro peritoneal cancer".

best wishes
Lesley

Lesley, yeh I think you are right it is Hosie.

I managed to find her death cert and was wondering if I could get some more deciphering help?

The parents look to be - Alexander Hosie and Isabella Henderson. I can make out what the occupation of the father is.

Hi Pandabean,

I think Alexander Hosie was a flaxdresser.

All the best,

Chambers Dictionary definition of a flaxdresser -
one who prepares flax for the spinner successive processes of rippling, retting, grassing, breaking and scutching

(I'm sure that makes it all clearer)

rippling - to clear of seed by drawing through a ripple
ripple - noun - a toothed instrument for removing seeds etc. from flax or hemp

ret - to soften, spoil or rot by soaking or exposure to moisture

grassing - bleaching by exposure on grass

break - separate or come apart

scutch - to dress (eg. flax) by beating

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks again guys. :)

Now I am having trouble finding Hosie in Stirlingshire (around 1800) :( One thing leads to another I guess.

Hi Pandabean ~
I realise you posed the note about looking for Hosies in Stirlingshire ages ago but I have only recently joined in on talkingScot.com . The reason I am responding to your note is because I have Hosie ancestors from Denny/Dennyloanhead near Falkirk, Stirlingshire who were weavors. Derivatives of their name have been Hose, Mclehose and Hossie. My Hosie ancestors however left that area in 1833 and left from Greenock for Canada. I have been looking for more on that line including Wilson/Philp/ Stark/ Robison who married into my Hosie line. I am also researching Leys and Stewart ancestors from Aberdeenshire ... Crathie, Braemar, Strathdon and Corgarff.

Hi Tealynn,

I see your area of interest is similar to mine - Crathie and Strathdon. My direct line comes down through Peter MITCHELL and Mary BOWMAN who married in Crathie circa 1802 and had at least 10 children one of whom William MITCHELL (b.1811) married Margaret GRASSICK and settled in Strathdon. The LEYS name crops up here and there too. Peter and Mary's son Angus MITCHELL married Janet COOPER (COUPER) and their 1st daughter was christened Ann Leys MITCHELL. A great grand child also has LEYS included in forenames - Margaret Mary Ann Leys CLEMENTS born 1904 in Crathie daughter of Maggie MITCHELL and Charles CLEMENTS.

In addition, Peter and Mary's daughter Margaret MITCHELL born 1823 Crathie married George LEYS in 1856, son of William LEYS and Margaret ANDERSON.

Any connection?

Sorry I'm so late in replying to your post - I used to post here a lot after I joined first (and got masses amounts of help from others) but I've been studying and hadn't a lot of time - still don't but I've accidentaly solved some brick walls lately and it's started me off again - real addiction this!
