I was kindly sent some information from the 1861 census offline, so I will post it here.
"On the 1861 census index I think that it's your lot...at least I think that it's the family that you have from the 1881 census......they were living in the 651/1 ( Airdrie ) area
James Barton Age 35 Born America
Margaret Barton Age 35 Born Old Monklands
James Barton Age 9 Born Airdrie
William Barton Age 7 Born Airdrie
John Barton Age 1 Born Airdrie"
I think this is possibly could be my lot, and I now have a feeling either James fudged his age to appear older, or the children did not really know what his age was, as Margaret's death certificate in 1903, places her much closer to the age on this census, than the original "Guestimate" I had for James' age. Williams age fits perfectly! as do the other siblings.
But, theres one of those buts again. Margarets age on Census does not match with information I have on her birth, which was supposed to be 1836, and not 1826 as the above age would indicate.
Perhaps they both fudged their ages. Although the possible age discrepancy is getting smaller now, only 10 years
Oh bugger, I think I need another drink and some valium
I did an IGI birth/christening for Margaret around the time and there are four of them from 1827 to 1836, the big problem is that when her death was registered by her son John, he geve information on his parents instead of hers on her death certificate.
I need a rest
