Martha

Post by Jack » Thu Jun 15, 2006 11:13 pm

Hi Caroline,
There is a Glasgow Poor Relief application for Martha. I could get details in a couple of weeks.
Or e-mail Archives at The Mitchell Library, Glasgow for a quote on the cost of photocopying the pages and sending them to you.

Some of the writing is very small and cramped, and i'll need the magnifying glass to read it....
Below is from the record - i just took a wee peek to confirm she was "your" Martha.
The record explains why she was in Gartloch.
And so, yes Jean - not wild at all, you've got the right Martha in 1903!
--
D-HEW 10/4/93. page 194. 11 Nov 1896.
Martha MILTON SCOTT age 38, b Irvine, 413 Gallowgate Street.
-
Married to Robert SCOTT, 39. Parents - Alexander SCOTT & Lucy MAY.
Martha's parents - William MILTON & Mary MUIR (Dead).
-
"...her father William MOUNTAIN or MILTON deserted her when young,
and she marrried under the name of "MUIR" - her mother's name.
Husband was in the 74th Highlanders for 6yrs till 18 Nov 1881. Discharged at Aldershot..."

ps, forgot to say there are records for -
Mary MOUNTAIN, 17, b Kirkoswald. D-HEW 17/194. page 47777. Applied 1878.
Mary Moore MOUNTAIN, 55, b Fermanagh. D-HEW 17/301. page 84517. Applied 1887.
Alexander Muir MILTON, 42, b Kirkoswald. D-HEW 17/592. page 91544. Applied 1907.
These might be Barony records, and many of those are "wet copies" making them difficult to read. But i'll see what i can do.

Hi folks

Brilliant Jack! 8)

No prob finding the death of Mary if you just use the right surname....

1892 MOUNTAIN MARY MOORE F 58 PLANTATION

It's got parents names and an informant daughters name and she also claims to be a widow!

Best wishes

Hi Jack,

Thanks for taking the time to do all this.

I've e-mailed the Mitchell and asked for a quote for copying all 4 records and sending them to me, but I know from previous experience that they can take a while to reply because of the volume of enquiries, so you might be back at the Mitchell before I hear from them. If so you could let me know if the latter records are worth getting.

Marthas poor record confirms what I suspected - that the father had deserted the family so that is why they went under the mothers name.

Still can't find the father William in the 1881 census though, goodness knows what name he was under then!

Hi Jean,

I had this down as one to look up when I next bought credits(I've vowed I'm not buying any more this month!), so thanks for confirming it's the right one and I'll have a look when I cave in and go back on SP.
