Smith

HI deby: Thank you thinking of me but my Margaret Smith is from Fife and then moved to Bo''ness with son John for the 1841 census. I don't think she was in Irvine however that doesn't mean she wasn't. If you do see one and it looks promising let me know. Donna

Hi Donna,
Do you know who Margaret SMITH's parents are?
And any possibility that Margaret wasn't from Fife, but from Bo'ness?

Hendersons from Bo'ness

Post by donna petrie » Wed Sep 13, 2006 1:14 am

HI: I 'm just going by what was various census returns. 1851 say he was born in Fife but 1861 says Bo'ness. So I assume mother was from same place. However we all know that mistakes were made so it could very well be that Margaret and John were from Bo'ness. I have no idea who her parents were. On the 1841 census for Bo'ness there is a Margaret Smith and John Henderson age 12 . I believe they are mine because of this Henderson/Smith combination. Donna

John Henderson & Margaret Smith

Post by Jack » Wed Sep 13, 2006 10:23 am

Hi Donna,
It was only in 1851 that John HENDERSON had a birthplace of Dunfermline, Fife (same as wife Ann FOOT).
But from 1861 to 1901 it is Bo'ness.
The 1855 BC of Alexander HENDERSON should say where father John was born.

This next part is pure speculation with no proof...!
An LDS member has an interest in the family.
Could Margaret SMITH have married nearby Daniel McLEAN just after the census in 1841?
There doesn't appear to be another Margaret SMITH of the right age in Bo'ness.
(i know you have Margaret & John in 1841 - it's just to keep all this together)

Margaret Smith/Henderson

Post by donna petrie » Fri Sep 15, 2006 2:28 am

Thank you for all the information. It is a good theory about the marriage given that they lived at the same address and was under her MS of Smith. I checked the death cert but it did not mention her being married to John Henderson previously; they usually do. I also found a Margaret Smith widow of a John Henderson at one time but not a lot of proof there either. Donna

Re a Margaret Smith

Hi Donna,
I've seen a few DCs that unfortunately didn't give the previous spouses, and often it's crucial missing info.
But not with my own G-Father; only his 2nd wife (my G-Mother) on his 1926 DC - but i've both his MCs to show he did marry twice.
And the BCs of his 19 (so far...) children for further proof! Seventeen of which survived to adulthood.

Anyhow, it surely looks like my speculation was just that - and i was very wrong!
There WAS another Margaret SMITH of the right age in Bo'ness 1841, but under her married name of HASTIE.
This explains the 30yr old step-daur Elizabeth Hastie in 1861.
That did have me a wee bit puzzled...and i should've dug a bit deeper before my wild guesses!

Don't apologise Jack: it's nice that you took the time to try and help me and supplied all the info. Who knows, maybe someone might still see it and find it helps them out. Donna
