Hi Jean
I think Wetherclet or Wetherclete is near Wick. I'm making enquiries cos I know some of my rellies came from that area aswell.
Have you tried the various Caithness message boards etc? I found them very helpful.

I've just tried the placename search at ScotsOrigins, - see http://www.scotsorigins.com/ , - it returns any name that includes the search term (which appears in the 1881 census), and there's nothing promising starting with wet or ending in clett or clet

Hi Jean
Two thoughts:
1. I wonder of your placename could maybe be a farm or very small steading - that might not show on a map? And that maybe does not exist anymore? I had one of those, Cursnoch in Roseneath parish. It did exist, but doesn't now.

2. I am not familiar with Wick OPRs or how much detail they typically hold but be aware that the OPR marriage may not give you any more information than you already know - here is an example of one of the less informative ones from one of my lot:
  • OPR 502/00 0002, Roseneath, Dumbarton
17th January 1823 Archibald McNicol residing in the Parish of Bonhill and Margaret McKenzie in this enrolled their names for proclamation to marriage. They being three several times proclaimed in two days and no objections offered were married here by the Rvd. R Story on 27th same month.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi James

Many thanks for that prompt, - as this is exactly the manner in which the founders of TalkingScot hoped that the TS discussion group would develop, i.e. everyone helping everyone else as far as possible; which was the way that the sadly lamented, former DG associated with SP had developed to the satisfaction of most posters, .......

...... but then spoiled for that greater majority by the flaming and similar activities of a small number of very sad numpties, as well as posts involving the only subject on the www that has more hits than genealogy  , - all this is a context where neither GROS or ScotlandonLine were in a position to consider active moderation of the former ScotlandsPeople DG .................

Sic trasit gloria something :!:

David,

I had tremendous support from yourself to a first posting and as a new member so I can hardly refuse a wee bit of help to someone else, especially as I live in Caithness - lol!

Not looked far as yet - trying to contact a friend who would do the lookups on Scotlandspeople for me - (is registered and some experience and I can pay her). Plus, my search locators tied up trying to choose a forum model for me to start one up. I'm not a native of Caithness.

Hi all

WOW what a friendly helpful bunch you are! Thank you for all your help and suggestions.
Please do not worry too much about Wetherclett? as it was just a witness address on the sons birth cert and I wondered if it might give a clue to the father James' place of birth.
I have looked all through Caithness.org without success but will go through talkingscots.

Kind regards
Jean

Jean,
Did you not get to the Message Boards? There's a Gen section there - I know, I've used it.
