Torrance Connestions?

Post by jacktorran » Tue Sep 05, 2006 3:13 pm

I'm a direct descedent of Thomas Torrance aka. Andrew Torrance b 1735 Larkhall d 1805. Had sons: Thomas, John, Benjamin, James and William. THey all came to Canada in early 1800's. William married a Isabella Gibb and had her brother working for him.
Are there any connections?
The brothers were successful merchants in Canada. What would have caused them to leave?
Will share information

Hello Jacktorran,
I haven't gotten very far with the Torrance branch in my tree as its the wife of my Granduncle . I know from census and other sources that Elizabeth Torrances parents were born and married in Ireland as were some of the 11 children .For the present I have put all Irish research on hold in hopes that one day I may actually get to visit Ireland and see if I can't get past some of the brickwalls created by the lack of primary records.
As to "Why they would leave ?" My guess is same reason my family came to Canada....to see if the grass is greener on the other side.
I'd be interested in hearing about Thomas aka Andrew Torrance though . Sounds like you have a story there.
Happy Hunting,
HeatherH

Wilson and Mary were married in 1878 in Antrim, probably Dirraw.

The name to search for in Ireland is Torrans or Torrens

Wilson and Mary had at least 11 Children and moved from Ireland to Motherwell between 1881 and 1884.

They moved from Motherwell to Paisley between 1896 and 1898.

In Scotland some of the eight or nine children born here may have been registered as Terrace or Terrance as well as Torrans, Torrens and Torr?nce

Wilson's parents were Robert and Mary Hunter, of Kilrea, Londonderry Robert's father was Hugh, Mary Hunter's father was David

Robert Torrans and Mary Hunter were married 20 DEC 1849 in Kilrea Robert was born about 1831.

Hope this was of help.

Mary Thompson's parents were William and Sarah (Sally) McCaw, who were still producing children until 1870 in Dirraw
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.
