Well almost snap! My mother's own name was Ross so it appears on that line, but also in a more distant line from my step gt grandmother - her Rosses are from Glasgow. My mum's comes via Rothesay (!) then to Perth/Dundee/Forfar and points towards Forres and probably eventually Ross & Cromarty.

Hi Liz, In Glasgow I have Jemima Ross married William Smith, and also William Ross married Ann Wilson this pair in 1918, being my grandparents. They died in 1969 and 1946, my father died in the 1970s very young. Only started my family tree in January this year, and knew nothing, all I had was my Dads birth, death and marriage certs. Had a lot of fun and games with the Rosses, as I think it would be like finding Jones in Wales. So many of them.

Doesn't look like there's a match up, but like yourself I've only really just begun to look at my mum's paternal line, because very little was known about them. I've spent years on the maternal lines and also my dad's. Most Ross folk, when you get back far enough, seem to emanate from Ross & Cromarty, where every other person seems to be called Ross. I really do hope you enjoy your trip to Glasgow/Scotland.

Thank you Liz I am sure I am going to enjoy myself even if I cant find out anything else. My mother being an English woman from a large family was easy to trace, and had loads of help from members of her family. Funny though I am more interested in the Scottish side, as a lot of mystery surrounds all of them.

Be aware that there's two quite separate derivations for ROSS, - the first from the area of Ross & Cromarty, but the second from the deep SW of Scotland, possibly derived from the Norman/Flemish De RUIS.

Meant to say Anne, I am originally Anne Wilson from a big line of Wilsons in the Glasgow area

Difficult thing is though, researching Wilsons is a bit like Chan in the Chinese phone book - there are loads with the same name like John Wilson (one I am stuck on right now!)

Hi David, and thank you for that. My Ross's seem to be from around Roxburgh, Found my grandfather x4 born there in 1808. They seen to have moved in the army to Aberdeen and the went onto Dundee where they did seem to stay. My grandmother x3 was in the Dundee Combination poorhouse on the 1891 census. Some then went to Glasgow in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I hope to find out at some point where they originated from, but thats for another day.

Hi Annie, What a coincidence, my father was adopted Ross, being born a Wilson. Had he not been adopted my name would also have been Anne Ross. My Wilson line goes back to Ireland though and through the army ended up over here and married a Glasgow lass in 1885. My biological grandfather was born and bred in Glasgow, as also was my father.
