Hi all,

I don't know if you are aware that you can do a first name search on IGI. I did this for MONA in Scotland and there was (I think) 85 of them (of various spellings) mostly submitted entries, but there is about 5 extracted ones. So certainly not a common name in Scotland.

Karen
Lochiel, McKinlay, McGibbon/McCubbin, Cunningham, McDougall, Burnside - Lanarkshire->Ayrshire.
Hay, Hannah, - Kirkcudbright.
McIntosh, McQuaters/McWatters, White, - Kilmarnock
Murdoch, Hope, McMillan - Muirkirk

http://www.behindthename.com/php/extra. ... terms=mona

Suggests Monica, Monika, Monique, Monna, Mouna, and Muna as alternates. Being related to the Irish Muadhnait or the Irish/Scottish Moyna.

Users at that site also suggest it as a short form of Ramona or Simona.

Frances
John Kelly (b 22 Sep 1897) eldest child of John Kelly & Christina Lipsett Kelly of Glasgow

Hi Davie

She was my grandmas (half) sister and I cant for the life of me find the mail or notes that have her info from the family and i dont have the near past on my software.
Can you let us know when the first Mona was born?
Off hand im almost sure she was born in Aberdeen not Glasgow c1908 ish and youve got me questioning it as i cant prove it 100% right now :? .
And do you know where the name originated for your family
No i dont. In the same era others were given names Iris, Noel, Dorothy and the like and these wernt previous family names either.

Reading up on the history of the painting it says it became more famous in 1911 when it was stolen - perhaps sparking off a trend of naming children "Mona" ? obviously not exactly a stampeed for the name judging by the 85 that Karen found :roll:

There will be some transatlantic and local mails flying about tonight from this pc :wink:
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Isn't Mona also the Welsh name for the Isle of Anglesey?
seeking McColl from Donegal and Greenock, McKay from Antrim and Greenock;
Whiteford from Ballycastle and Greenock; Tucker from Port Glasgow, and McGinty.

Anglesey = Ynys Mon
(Don't ask me how it should be pronounced)

All the best,

My mother's name was Mona, but that was her mother's maiden name jumbled (MOAN). She had a friend also called Mona whose mother came from the Isle of Man (I think) and that was supposed to be the Mona Isle.
Researching Campbell, Ramage, Moan, McAnulty (all spellings), Nelson, Gardner
