To be honest, I thought so too, but wondered if it might have been a vague possibility.

I've written to the Cemetery & Crematoria people in Glasgow City Council asking if they can give me any information they might have about his burial at Sighthill Cemetery.

Keeping my fingers crossed they might have more information.

Sorry for the misleading information. I wasn't aware that the term "inmate" was used for people other than those under lock and key. At least I've learned something new. ;)

Seeing the word inmate and discovering that the High Court did have cells led me to my conclusion. I hope you get to the bottom of your mystery and have some succes with your email. Don't be surprised if the come back asking for £56 to look.

 £56

Maybe I'll just accept the when, the where and the what of his death.

I realise a charge would need to be made, but that is way over the top.

Hi Mary

Last year I found that one of my lot was buried at Sighthill... and from his death notice in the newspapers I knew the date he was buried.

I emailed the Land services to ask if they could tell me the lair number
The reply took about five weeks and they gave me a contact phone number for someone "who given sufficient notice (at least several days), will make arrangements to have you directed to the grave during normal working hours".

Sighthill is a huge cemetery (with the usual quota of toppled stones), and the layout is quite complex..... I spent hours there searching but couldn't find the lair without the directions.

I didn't have to pay anything.... probably because there was no search involved as I only needed the lair number (I gave them the dates of death and burial).

Good luck

Hi Jim,

I couldn't find an email address anywhere for them. Could you let me know what it is, please.

Even though I have written to Cemeteries and Crematoria dept. It wouldn't do any harm to pop an email off - do you think?

I do need a bit more than just the lair number. I really would like to know if relatives were involved in the arrangements. Lanarkshire were able to give me that with another rellie.

Got your PM Jim. Thank you again.

I don't think admin would have any objection to you posting the Land email addy here, but I'm sure someone will let you know.

No problem as long as you replace the "@" with "AT". Sadly there are numpties out there who have developed search engines that cruise the www and harvest any phrase which includes "@" on the basis that this is most likely to be an email address, and therefore usable or sellable in a spam context .................. ("at" on t'other hand is such a common word in English so that it's not worth designing a search engine on that basis....)

Here I am putting my Tuppenceworth in again .
Don't know if you have seen this.

I "googled "144 Saltmarket " and it brought up this

Clackmannanshire Surnames List AD
Drummond, Daniel, -, 30-JAN-1810, Madderty, Carpenter, 02-JUL-1838 at Alloa to Ann Comrie, 08-APR-1857 at 144 Saltmarket Glasgow, Pam Walkinshaw ...

I did A IGI search for Daniel Drummond born 1785 and it shows his Parents Names !
I know it's not the answer to what 144 was ....But .

Hi Maureen,

I had already been in touch with Pam, after googling the same as you did.

We don't know if it is the same person, but she did say that Anne Comrie died shortly before Daniel married my rellie. She doesn't know if her Daniel remarried, though, so I still need to find his marriage to my Janet.

If he is shown as a widower, we might be onto a winner.
