That's interesting David - Lanachan/Sanachan was the result of trawling rather than inspiration in this case, but I'll remember the contents of your other post on the subject for future puzzelations (my grandma's word) .

Best wishes

Hi Pinkshoes

This thread inspired me to produce the other "Capitals Confusion" thread, - I've dabbled in it before now, but decided this time to get serious. [help]

Bernard Sanachan

Thank you to ALL for your suggestions. I am very grateful. The Sanaghans were originally from Co. Tyrone, and I daresay their broad accents contributed to the confusion over the pronunciation and spelling of the name.
But, hey, that isn't a problem when you have the all the members of TS combining to help a body oot !

Susie
caught your post on bernard sannachan. My mother's sister Mary McMahon married Francis/Francie Sannachan Shearer in the 40s ( his parents were Thomas Shearer and mary Sannachan b 1886 and her parents were Francis Sannachan and Mary Brawley) .
I said I'd have a look to see what i could find out about the sannachans for the family. I did find your bernard in the 1861 census and I believe that this family are my sannachans as well. Haven't done too much on it but his mother Mary b 1886 seems to have been a right character. i'm sure since the date of 2006 you have probably solved your problem but it'd be great if you could help me a wee bit. Francie Sannachan Shearer is a part of my own Morton family tree which i am trying to bring to a conclusion and it would be marvellous to put something in for my cousins
Hope you will reply

Cath, there are 10 Sannachan's listed in the National Archives, http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/

Thanks for that, there's some fascinating stuff there. I could search for hours ! I think I've found an ancestor who was convicted of "culpable homicide". He was tried at Perth in 1872.
Cheers
