Couldn't find Highland Lane on an 1865 map but at magnification the whole thing was going fuzzy.

I think I'll go and put my feet up now

I've just had a brilliant stroke of luck and found the family in 1891 too, thanks to your tips. The surname is recorded as McGown - that little 'a' made all the difference! My Great Grandmother is there aged 7 but her sister is not, so I assume the worst.

The problem is still their marriage in 1877. I just can't work out why it is untraceable. I've dropped most of the letters and wild searched using both James McGowan and Catherine McMullin. Catherine's first marriage is also eluding me.

If you have any more suggestions, I'd be grateful.

Hi Folks

Thanks to your tips I've found my Great Great Grandmother's first marriage to James McCafferty - so now I have her parental details and found that I've looked at her death records already as she died in Irvine on a visit - she lived in Kilmarnock. My Great Grandmother lived just outside Kilmarnock so it was aways a possibility in my mind. Through finding her death records I managed to trace both her parents and as a wonderful bonus, got yet another generation. This leads me to Ireland but I've yet to dip my toes into that pool!

Her marriage to my Great Great Grandfather James McGowan still eludes me and I'm now set to trace Catherine McMillan in the 1851 and 1861 census records from the Paisley area but I am so grateful for what I've found this week. Please take a bow!

I was reading this thread with interest as I was going to sugest the McGown spelling (I have elusive McGowans too). Also try McGow and McCown for the marriage, perhaps? I suggest the last one as it may be listed as a mistranscription.
