You must be on an adrenaline high now.

Now! If only you could bottle your 'luck' you could recoup all your SP losses.

I was just giving a similar piece of common sense on another post. It often pays off - then you castigate yourself for your previous failures. Just shows that we hone our searching skills all the time.

Hello Mary,

I've just come in the middle of all this so I don't know what you have or don't have.
What does it say on Margaret's (b 1869) birth entry about her parents place of marriage?

Is this your Margaret Girtrigg in 1841?

Yes, Annette, that Gerthrigg bunch are my lot. I found that a while ago using what seemed like more * than letters :D

The Creighton family you've given me doesn't seem to be my James, unless his brother John is a "namesake child" for the one I know of that was born in 1819. My James also had a sister, Margaret born 1822, but haven't found a Mary yet.

Also, my James was a Plasterer, like his father.

Having said all that, the naming pattern would suggest a possible sibling link of my James' father to this family. I shall investigate further, thank you [cheers]

Purely by accident, I discovered a marriage in Kilsyth in 1928 for another Margaret Ross Crichton born c1906, father named James Crichton and mother Mary Garden (they were married 1895 in Aberdeen and his parents were also married in Aberdeen).

Not knowing where my Great Grandmother's father was born, is it beyond the realms of possibility that these two Margaret Ross Crichtons could be related?

Possibly the second one is a granddaughter of the first one's father or one of his brothers?

Mary

My own experience is that in something like 90% to 95% of situations there does indeed turn out to be a link.

That stills leaves 5% to 10% of situations where either it has been pure coincidence, far from impossible when frequently occurring names, - surname, middle and given - are involved, e.g. John Brown SMITH, but I've had the occasional experience where one of more of the names involved were unusual, but no link could be found, - as far back as I looked that is, i.e. it could always have been the generation before that.

One of my maternal grannies sisters turned out to be named after a great-granny who died only a short time before the birth. In other words, similar names can easily span 3 or 4 generations ...... it's not the case that the name is used in every generation.

Actually David, my Margaret Ross Crichton has two sisters, Marion Barr McMillan Crichton and Helen McLean Crichton. There is also a brother, Robert Rodger Smith Crichton.

As yet, apart from the Rodger, I haven't come across any of their predecessors that might have provided those middle names, and I cannot imagine where the Helen came from. It's never appeared since as far as I can see.

Have to say, though, I do look out for those names in case I find another link.

Hi Annette, You are a STAR =D>

I did and it IS them! James and his mother are still there in 1851 and he IS now a Plasterer. I searched and found him in all the censuses. By 1861 he'd married Margaret and moved to Glasgow. In that census Margaret's brother John Girtrigg (spelt Gutrige - another new version) was living with them and 4 children.

Believe it or not, they lived in the same house (well in the same close) all the way through to 1901. When James died in Glasgow City poorhouse in 1903 they'd moved to a different house, but still in the same street!

Still haven't figured out the "John" in 1841. James' brother John would have been 22 by then, not just 15. Maybe the enumerator meant to write 25 (to round up to nearest 5).

Hello Mary,

Great stuff, glad my suggestion helped.

I won't be able to go today but I will check out his poorhouse application when I'm next at The Mitchell - you know I can't resist it. :D

That would be really great, Annette, thanks.

I can't help wondering if my Grandmother, who was a bit of a "Duchess" who purportedly "married beneath her station" ever knew that her Grandfather died in a poorhouse when she was 5 years old? Or what her reaction would have been if she'd ever found out

Ever wished you had a time machine
