The SP site is completely safe & has all the information you need to start. If you've got a 1901 birth to give you the address you'll also be able to look at the 1901 census, which could give lots of other information to take the family back further.

If you are still not comfortable, they now offer buying credits through the mail using cheque or credit card, which may be more appealing to you.

i have bought lots of credits on scotlands people and find it to be very safe.
ive never had any problems with it and it really is well worth buying some and taking a look

Hi Margaret

You have all the makings of a good line there. As the others have said get the Birth Certificate and then the marriage of the parents from SP which is a very reliable site. Once you have that you can probably find deaths of the parents which will take you back yet another generation and what's more they may well be lurking on the censuses just waiting for you to find out more about them.

If you get stuck or don't know how to choose the right person post again and everyone here will wellie in with their opinion.

Hello,
I have just done a search on familysearch.org and came across an Annie Main Melville b 7 Aug 1860 Kennoway, Fife, so as I had been told she was born about 1861 and this is the only Annie born at Kennoway, my ? is,
Would this be my Annie that i am after?
The only other Annie b 1861 was born at Kettle, Fife.

Hi Margaret

Jumping into the midst here.....if I read your notes correctly Annie was born and married in Scotland and you know the date of her marriage and who to. So if you view this record on Scotlands People (gonna cost you 6 credits) then it should state the names of her parents (in addition to her spouse and his parents and witnesses etc) So then knowing the names of her parents you can use these to look on the free Family Search website doing a parent search and see if they had an Annie...and also who else. Especially since it looks like she was born well before 1875 (which is I think the cut off for extracted entries in the IGI) you should find her. I haven't tested this so can't guarantee you success....but that's the way I'd do it if it were me!!!

Then once you've found the right parents names with a daughter Annie you'll see where her birth was registered and then know where to go looking for the record on Scotlands People where you can spend another 6 credits to download your very own copy!!

My father called in to visit today and I asked him to clean out his cupboards and lend me his father and mothers paperwork so I can go through it myself and also to get his thinking cap on as I am going to "chew his ears off" as well. He is very interested in finding out about his ancestors too.
