My Dad registered as John but known always even in school as Ian.1929!
It's even on his gravestone Ian(John).
His Dad was Jock & a Penicuik man & there has been a John in the family going back five generations so far.
That is a guid call pal.
The cunundrum I am trying to fin' aboot is wher the Ian cumfries
By all accounts it appears tae be a fairly recent spelling.

When you mention that "his dad was Jock" would he be given the name James or John?
Ah don't waannt tae confuse the post further, jist interestit'

There is also an Iain, but he is even later - mid to late 60's.
Thought I should also mention that, although the father was known to EVERYONE ELSE as Jake, his wife only ever called him John. If she'd fitted in with the rest of the family, my cousin would have been christened John after all

I have in my tree 3 cousins all christened John (oh, that Scottish naming pattern!). The eldest (my father) was known as John, the next as Jack and the youngest as Ian (b. 1914). I guess had they been born later the younger ones might have Jack & Ian on their BCs.

Otherwise the oldest Ian I know was born 1933.

Searching Ross - Lochwinnoch & Eaglesham, Renfrewshire; Glasgow; Glover - Paisley; Macadam - Glasgow.
