I actually voted for McCull, but think I should have gone for M'Cull.
Looking at the full page, the a's are all closed so not a McCall variant. I don't think it's careless writing, but a definite "u".
but who am I to decide? thank goodness it isn't up to me.
Annpa
Thinking about it again, it could have been McCull with the c after the M as superscript.
Cheers

I know it looks like McCall, but the family name is definitely McColl. In the various BMD certs it's clearly McColl.
seeking McColl from Donegal and Greenock, McKay from Antrim and Greenock;
Whiteford from Ballycastle and Greenock; Tucker from Port Glasgow, and McGinty.

From looking at the other vowels on the page, it does seem to me that 'McCull' was being written - whether in error or otherwise. It's just one of these things - the writer may heard a different accent (of 'McColl') than that to which they were accustomed. It's a good warning to use wildcards!

Again, just to emphasize, if you're an Indian subcontinent / Chinese/ Taiwanese / Phillipino data inputter working for a contractor in those parts of the world you don't have the luxury of a leisurely look at the rest of the page, - you just look, make an immediate judgement and enter what you see.

Witness all the time and effort expended so far on answering my poll :!:

I might be a little bit slow on the uptake here, but are you saying that the records are being inputted by people not in the UK? If so, and errors are being made - like McCall/McCull etc., what are the repercussions for the many thousands of us who are searching for people?

Most large indexing projects carried out by gov't organisations and commercial companies use data input contractors in the Third World. There's arguments for and against whether or not that leads to a higher error rate compared to using contractors in the UK. The overseas contractors are given extensive training and there are quality control procedures.
