Re McCracken family

Post by Jack » Sat Feb 24, 2007 12:30 pm

Hi Brenda,
These look like your family, but there is a big age diffference to your
John McCRACKEN aged 31 yrs that David found in 1881.
(making for a birth abt 1850)
Maybe he's just taken a few years off his age because of a younger wife.
(it can, and does, happen!)
John McCRACKEN, according to the censuses below, was born -
1840 (as 1 yr old on 1841 census - was this meant to be 6 yrs?)
1835 (as 16 yrs on 1851 census)
1835 (as 26 yrs on 1861 census)
--
Later - I was in Partick today and dropped into the GWSFHS to look at the original 1841 census page.
The age is as 7 - so if these censuses are your family then John was born abt 1834 or 1835.
And his age on the 1865 MC to Agnes Miller may well bear this out - but might not!

I'm totally overwhelmed by the kindness of all of you. In just a couple of days I've had more information that I have been able to glean in years. THANK YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH.

Was going through the mess of papers last night and found a reference to a Jean McCracken. Chr. Colmonell Jan 13th 1832 , she MAY be John's sister as her parents names are John McCracken & Janet McCreadie
I will go through my wee bits and pieces of data and try to collate it with what you have provided.
Thanks again

Brenda

A sad tale.

Wee Agnes Miller McCRACKEN was born on 03Jul1873, and died 5 days later on 08Jul1873, the cause of death being shown as "Premature Birth". Her mother then died 5 weeks after her daughter's birth on 12Aug1873, the causes of death shown as "Child Birth 5 weeks, Dropsy 4 weeks", but "no immediate medical attendant", so who provided the info on the causes of death? A Peter Crawford M.D. certified the death of wee Agnes, so that you'd have imagined that he would also have been treating the mother.

The birth and deaths took place at 678 Duke Street.

For the actual register entries, - digitised images, - see www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk .

David

PS

I was completely knackered y'day evening after 3 hours of lecturing in the morning at the Strathclyde University Postgraduate Certificate course, never mind the three Six Nations matches taking my attention, - I regret that I just made it home in time to see the second half of Scotland's defeat by Italy  , but then they're due it for over 5 decades worth of fish suppers :!: [5 cups] , which is my feeble excuse for not posting last night that there was something in Jack's post which led me to conclude that the census entries he found, despite the age differences, were indeed the correct families.

What that was, in terms of the detail, I'm afraid that I can't now recall.

BTW, my post y'day morning was as Montrose Budie..........

Hello David,

Thank you very much for the information....Indeed a sad tale.

Think that John & Agnes were the parents of ..
Eliza Miller B 27-1-1866
James, B 15-4-1869
Agnes Miller B 03-7-1873

No wonder John remarried [Elizabeth Gibbon] less than a year after his wife's death with three wee weans to bring up!

Hi Brenda

Very common that a widower quite quickly remarried in terms of the needs of the existing wains, - that is, of course, if his extended family couldn't assist. But, most often, there was a further marriage.

Hi Brenda

You need to spend some credits at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to look at the images of these births; the marriage of the parents; and the deaths of Agnes (senior) and wee Agnes Miller ................
