Hi Brenda,

How clear is the print on the first marriage cert? Is it possible that he is actually 20 in 1865. If he was 30 in 1874 it would mean he was born around 1844-5, same as if he were 20 when he first married.
Iv'e no ideas about the name difference though. Sorry

The writing is very clear, on John's 1st m/c to Agnes Miller [1865] he states his age as 28, she was 25.

Yet on his second marriage certificate [June 5th 1874] his age is 30, [ should be 37?] Elizabeth Gibbon's 22, making an age difference of 8 years.

BUT..in the he 1881 Census he is 31 , Elizabeth 28 , a difference of only 3 years .

I always thought he was born abt.1834 / 1835 Colmonell , Ayrshire , now have a horrible feeling that after all this searching I have the wrong John McCracken.

Hi Brenda,
I think you've the right John McCRACKEN; he's just a tad confused on his true age!
You'll probably have these two censuses?
The original 1841 page might show John as 1yr is wrong, and shd be 7yrs.
This would make more sense as he's aged 16 in 1851.
