Folks

Sorry if I diverted you from the original query, it wasn't my intention.

No problem, Maple,
You brought up an important point that I'm sure others will have wondered about as well.
Regards,
Sarah

I really appreciate the time and effort all of you have put into replying to my query, and feel rather guilty for not being clever enough to find out all this data myself
I'm trying to clarify what I have found so far...

1841 Census 594 Ed 15 p 9 [Girvan ]
John McCracken,40 Baker J, b SCT
Jinet McCracken, 40, b AYR
Elen McCracken, 15, b SCT
JOHN McCRACKEN, , 7 B AYR

1851 Cenus 594 [482] Ed pp 8-9 [ Girvan ]
Dalrymple Street
John McCracken, head, 49 Master Baker emp 3 men b Glasgow, LKS
Janet McCracken, wife, 50, Housekeeper, b Ballantrae, AYR
Helen Hint? , step-daughter, Dress Maker, b Glasgow[this should be Vint as Janet was previously married to James Vint]
JOHN McCRACKEN, Junr, son, 16 Baker,[b] b Colmonnell, AYR[/b]
John McCulloch, servant, 23, b Dalmellington, AYR
Robert Limon /Simon, servant, 17 baker, b Girvan AYR [ could be either surname]

1861 census 644-1 Ed 12 p 11 [ Glasgow]- St David
18 North Albion St
Janet McCarcken, head, 72? b Ballantrae [ age should be about 60]
Hellen McCracken, daur, 34 Housekeeper, b Glasgow
JOHN McCRACKEN, son, 26 Store keeper,[ provision ] b Colmonnell, AYR
John McCredie, gr-son, 5 B Girvan, Ayr
John McColl, boarder, 20 baker, b Girvan
Arthur a, Jamieson, boarder, 17 Medical Student, b St Perrre, Guernsey
Burn Moore, boarder, 19 Medical Student, b Ireland
Mary Donaldson, servant, 24, Table Maid, b Glasgow

1871 census
69 North Albion St Glasgow
Janet McCracken, head, 83? Lodging housekeeper b Ballantrae
JOHN MCCRACKEN, son married , 36 Jouneyman baker b Colmonell
Helen Vint, step-daughter 45, unmarried, dom servant
John Limond granddson 15 salesman spirit shop

The death cert for Janet McCracken..
27th Dec 1873, 20 Stockwell Place, Glasgow....[This address is given as the place of residence on John's marriage to Elizabeth Gibben June 5th 1874]
Janet McCracken, age 66
Widow of
1at James Vint
2nd John McCracken, Master Baker
Parents: John McCreadie, farmer, dec & Janet McCreadie [ nee Fergie]
Info given to Registrar by son JOHN McCRACKEN

So I'm ALMOST certain that I'm on the right track with John being born @ Comonell, but still no record of his birth.
I've just had another try at deciphering the writing on his death cert. May 13 1886, the age is either 43 or 48 . If it's 48 then it adds credence to his being born abt 1835.
So I'll keep on trying. Thanks again for all your help

Take care
Brenda

John McCracken's age

Post by Jack » Thu Apr 19, 2007 1:11 pm

Hi Brenda,
The 1886 DC has John McCRACKEN as aged 43.
I think he just dropped his age on his marriages because both his wives were younger....
Age awareness for men (and women) in later life isn't uncommon!
--
IF John's ages in the earlier censuses are correct,
then it would appear he was born between 8th April - 6th June 1834.

1841 - census night 6th June; John had reached 7 yrs.
1851 - census night 30th March; John still 16 yrs.
1861 - census night 7th April; John still 26 yrs.

(the useful Census link at the top of the TS page gives dates for all the years)
--
The younger a person is on a census has the likelihood for a more accurate age.
Parents, but especially so mothers, usually remember!

Hi Jack

Many thanks for that information.

I'm now absolutely positive that I am an eejit concerning all things to do with genealogy. I didn't know you could find the dates of the Census here on TS.

I've been trying to piece this family together for three years, hate to think what will happen when I make a start on the McCreadies and McLeans!

Thanks again

Take care

Hi Brenda

No how, no way do you need to feel guilty. All the help on this discussion group is freely given.

Give it a few months, and you'll be surprised at the number of posts where you can help someone, based either on some specific knowledge that you have, - and you wouldn't believe what that might involve, given the sometimes esoteric questions that arise here, - or, as so often happens, you'll find that you are then able to assist a new member who doesn't know the ropes at all !!

By such a process has TalkingScot become the very successful DG that it is today [woohoo] [talkingscot]
