now the plot is thickening to that muddy consistency we love so much.....if this is your THomas in 1841:

Name: Thos McFadden
Age: 55
Estimated birth year: abt 1786
Gender: Male
Where born: Scotland

Civil parish: St Cuthbert
Hundred: Cumberland
County/Island: Cumberland
Country: England

Street address:

Occupation: View image

Registration district: Carlisle
Sub-registration district: St Cuthbert
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Jane McFadden 25
Joshua McFadden 17
Margaret McFadden 55
Thos McFadden 55
William McFadden 20

Then why oh why does the original image have that "Y" in the column as Born Same County?? :!: ie...born England is what I get from that. Is Carlisle one of those places with the bouncing borders in 1841????? But no it can't be as the census is the English one. I'm going to do some housework of my own and rest my mind for a bit.... :?

Confused
Jean

Sorry Jean, but that "y" is in the "Whether born in Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts" column, not the "Same County" one.

Whoever transcribed that image probably took that curly "Y" to be an "S", same as Fidget did.

Yer not wrong there Jean

Added hastily later: I mean about the Y, NOT about you losing it

That is a "Y" after all. That'll teach me to take more time comparing

Fidget, Sorry for almost leading you astray

Thanks for all the interest. Never mind about leading me astray, how does a heart attack sound? I'd have to send hubby's kilt back? Thomas & Margaret Hodgson did have a jane born 1808 in Carlisle. I thought the other jane b 1816 in Scotland was probably a neice of Thomas's.
There is one scottish family with Thomas b 1788, william b 1786 and jane b 1785.
and another with thomas 1781 and william 1787. I'll go back and look for jean b 1816 and see if she can make the link for me.

Hi Fidget
Thanks Lesley,
I should have read the FAQs.
Nae problem :D - this is a big site, there is a lot to read. Just as with family research, on the forum its the same; half the battle is knowing what is available and where to find it!

Best wishes
Lesley
