This is going to drive me crazy! I am have to lay this all out. If it was Janet White who died in 1875...then I wonder why Janet Fife is on 3 of the childrens birth registry? It would make sense if Fife was listed as the older children's birth..but she is listed on Alexander, Ann and Mary's registeries. I will download Janet White OPR death and see what it says.

Sarah, thank-you so much for looking into this. I am trying to concentrate on this particular family until I get it down pat. There are a ton of people yet to research...I have only been working on this seriously since the beginning of November. It is unlike me, but I have developed a strange obsession (I have heard that it happens once you start :D ) for researching ancestors.

It gets blury and confusing with all of the names. I have finally taken to developing file folders for main persons in the tree. I am up to about 95 or 100 people in the whole tree now. Not bad considering when I started, I had only my grandparents names and two ggrandmothers names. No birth dates/locations or spouse names. Any relatives that could help me with historic information have passed away. My dear Aunt Mary (the name was still prevailing!) was the only person that was interested in family history. Her and I would talk about it and I have a scrap of paper that she had written on a bit about the family. She passed away over 10 yrs ago now...

I am having fun doing this. It is a pleasant obsession, if I do say so myself.

I digress...back to the Janets. I wonder if there is a second wife around somewhere. There are John and Robert and Hellen yet to discover. They are not listed in the IGI like the other kids..Mary Alex and Ann. Who have Janet Fife as the mother!?

I have downloaded John Jack's birth registry from SP. Alexander is listed as his brother, with parents of Robert Jack and Helen Hunter.

I will go through my files of census and whatnot...if I have a major ahah moment, I will be sure to let you know.

Happy Sunday everyone!
Sandy

A New Year's wish, Andrew - May all your downloads be as neat and clear as this one!

I wonder
  • a) why there were differing amounts collected for the proclaimations
    b) 2/6 for some, 5/2 for others and then 10/6? and wouldn't that have been a fair amount for some?
    c) why poor Edward Norton was proclaimed with no partner

Hi Frances,

Maybe the fees had something to do with what they could afford...on the otherhand...maybe they were just paying up on "tick"  Hopefully Edward Norton wasn't overcome by the amount of his fee that he forgot the name of his bride to be

Sorry, in a silly mood tonight...hopefully someone will come up with the answer

Regards,
Anne H

You mean the death certificate? Or her birth? If the death cert, did it give her husband's name? Were her parents as indicated in the IGI record I posted? Who was the informant?

Surely, you're not going to just leave us hanging here without telling the rest of the story?

In anticipation,
Sarah

Sneaking a quick post from work...and writing from memory...I dared not bring my genealogy docs to work or I would never get anything done!

Sorry, it was the death certificate that I downloaded. The parents were Robert White and Elizabeth Brown. Death was in Gorbals and husband is listed as John Jack (deceased)....Informant was Alexander - Son. I cannot remember the address stated at the time of death. Death by old age. Not sure if I have a copy of Alexander's birth registry. I have Mary and Ann's (Mother Fife) downloaded. On the IGI Alex has the mother of Janet Fife.

 That's why I finally had to take early retirement

Since the Janet who had children with Alexander Jack is not in the household with Alexander in 1841... we may never know who she was! Or did she just decide she liked John better? 8)

Thanks for filling us in,
Sarah

Me again :)

I am now going off on a tangent for the Janet White - Janet Fife name. I am thinking that perhaps Janet White was married to Fife prior to John Jack. I looked up the marriages and there is one Janet White married to William Fife in CLK. 20/10/1805...but this would make her only 11 yrs old...at the time of marriage. Am I too far off on the tangent?

My question is, how does one go about finding if William died and Janet re-married? The names I am dealing with are so common.

On Janet's marriage reg. to John, it only has her name White. Boy, I wish I could go back in time just for a visit to see what was really going on back then!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

PS. I also cannot find anything on Alexander Jack (children's birth or marriage on SP) but there is on the IG. Why would that be? How could it be?
