Hi,
I have had a reply from Glasgow City Council regarding my query about Hugh Glacken. They have said they are not able to search the records of the Necropolis without his dod and suggested I contact the Register of Births Deaths and Marriages at Martha Street Glasgow.
My question is,( and I am sorry if there is an obvious answer, I am just confused as to why no-one has suggested this already if it is this simple) - If I am not able to find Hugh's dod on ScotlandsPeople does anyone know how feasable is it that they will be able to find it at the Register of Births Deaths and Marriages?
many thanks
Helen

Hi Helen
I do not know if Martha Street have burial records or not - my impression was that the office there is a Registrar, and from a brief Google, it appears that they only hold BMD info from post -1855, but I'm sure some of our members from that area will be able to put us on the right track.
If it were me, I'd also be tempted to contact St Michaels RC Church in Gallowgate. IF the family attended that church (as stated above, there may be other RC churches in the area....) then they may hold records of deaths for the congregation.
Best wishes
Lesley
Pre-1855 deaths (i.e. those from OPRs ) are not on Scotlands People. In addition, as far as I remember this family are RC, so would not likely be in the OPRs in any case, even if deaths were there to search before 1855.My question is,( and I am sorry if there is an obvious answer, I am just confused as to why no-one has suggested this already if it is this simple) - If I am not able to find Hugh's dod on ScotlandsPeople

I suspect the Cemeteries & Crematoria Registrar office in the following link (scroll to bottom of page) may be able to help, but they may require a d.o.d before starting a search and as far as I remember from other posts on TS, I think this office make a charge to search.

Hi Annette,
You do not appear insensitive or rude. I am not really desperate to find young Hugh's burial place. I am not really sure how this post has taken on this research route. I am just trying to find his dod. I am more interested in finding burial details of his parents Hugh and Catherine, I thought there may be a family plot.
Hi Lesley,
I have already written to St Michaels RC Church but not yet received a response. Father Hugh died in the poor house and mother Catherine died in Green Street Calton so not sure if St Michaels is in the area. I have contacted an RC church in Edinburgh before regarding another family and they were very helpful so I am keeping my fingers crossed.
I had another look at the details I already have in the hope that I have may missed something. I have Hugh and Catherines marriage from SP. There are a few details that I cannot make out regarding the minister but not sure if they are relevant to my research. I never found any of the childrens birth details they were all born before 1855 and RC so that would make sense. I have relied on the census for information.
This family and the Belli's have proved to be the most difficult to research but are the families that prompted me to start my research in the first place. Both are on my Dad's side and I would really like to get more information. Maybe something will turn up.
all the best

Hi Helen
My understanding, and I may have picked this up wrongly, was that you were trying to find out when Hugh died and where Hugh was buried. As it seemed a bit of an impossible task that someone might just find him with sheer luck on the microfilms at the Mitchell, myself and Annette have been trying to find other ways that you might approach the problem, and sources where you might be able to find this information out for yourself, as this is how I would approach a family history conundrum of my own; "if you can't find the info one way, how else or where else could you approach the problem to find the info you want?". Please forgive my over enthusiasm.
Best wishes

Oh Lesley,
I am so sorry if I gave the impression I was not grateful for all the help I have received. Please do not lose your enthusiasm and accept my thanks for your help and time you have taken to respond to my queries.
I am still researching the Glacken line and want to find as much out as I can. If finding the burial place for son Hugh leads to more information then that would be great.
all the best

Hi Helen
I'm just very aware that at times I become very focussed on the problem and like a small terrier, I'm loath to give up until all possible angles have been covered. A malaise, I think, which is particulary associated with obsessed family history folk, of which there are a few on here!
However, it has been proven time and time again on TS, that persistence does tend to pay off, .....it just may take some time.
Stick with it!
Best wishes

Hi Lesley,
Yes, I am also like a dog with a bone. I am not giving up my reseach into this family. I will stick with it. I know from my own experience that persistence does pay of, it's just that some ancestors are so much harder to find that others.
I am so glad you did not take offence with my reply to Annette. I really thought I had upset you, that was not my intention.
I am still waiting on a response from St Michaels Church. Maybe there was a family plot. I will keep my fingers crossed.
