hi again Anette
I purchased credits and tried a couple of searches but not having a lot of luck so far. Will push on tomorrow though- getting a bit late over here tonight. When I searched the 1861 census by putting in George Greig aged 30, which was what the one that you sent me had, I got 11 George Greigs none aged 30!! also when I searched births 1855-2006 for George Fraser Greig I got 1 match but then when I paid for search got a blank page- then clicked where it says "R U having difficulties" and the page showed for 1 second then disappeared!!. Tried again but same thing. maybe I will have better luck tomorrow. will also have a good look at alans info tomorrow - you are all very, very helpful. must get to bed soon.

When you are logged in to Scotlands People change your settings to Direct Download.

On the home page click on My Details - scroll down till you see Image Viewer option, change to Direct Download and save your settings.

The birth entry you purchased will be in 'previous searches'. Hopefully when you click on it again you will be able to view and save the image.

For the 1861 census search for James M* Greig and other name George F*.
That should hopefully be them.

Regards,
Annette

Hello Sandal1,

I forgot to check the parent’s deaths and post them with the others, the ones highlighted are presumably them. It’s possible the “Ducid” has been truncated or whatever.

All George & Mary Greig Queensland deaths 1871-1929.

1873/C264 Greig George - William Greig, Margaret Lockhart
1886/C642 Greig George James - George Greig, Catherine Smart
1902/C2353 Greig George - Alexander Greig, Jean Fraser

1911/B13769 Greig Mary Milne - James Milne, Martha Ducid

1916/B23695 Greig Mary Ellen -
1924/C2947 Greig Mary Jane - James Graham, Rebecca Wilson

There’s an extracted marriage on the IGI that looks promising
JAMES MILN
Marriages: Spouse: MARTHA DUGUID
Marriage: 09 DEC 1826 Chapel Of Garioch, Aberdeen, Scotland

A parent search of the IGI brings up this batch of kids, all extracted records.

MARTHA MILNE -
Gender: Female Christening: 19 FEB 1828 Keithhall And Kinkell, Aberdeen, Scotland
JAMES MILNE -
Gender: Male Christening: 02 MAY 1829 Keithhall And Kinkell, Aberdeen, Scotland
MARY MILNE -
Gender: Female Christening: 17 JAN 1831 Keithhall And Kinkell, Aberdeen, Scotland
ISABEL MILNE -
Gender: Female Christening: 30 JAN 1833 Keithhall And Kinkell, Aberdeen, Scotland
HELEN MILNE -
Gender: Female Christening: 16 MAY 1836 Keithhall And Kinkell, Aberdeen, Scotland

How did you learn of the ship Conway, was it something you picked up from your own research or was it from documents or stories handed down?

Hi Alan
re the "Conway" - it was in an old newspaper cutting of the Courier Mail from 1958 that was in my mum's things. It was a story they had written on James Milne Greig who was turning 100 yrs old on Aug 28th that year. It gave a background of his life in Qld - he was the oldest old boy of Ipswich Grammar, a prominenet cricketer etc and stuff like that but it also mentioned he was born in Aberdeen and came to Qld in the sailing ship "Conway" the voyage taking five months. In the same envelope was a cutting of the Courier from Nov 12 1964 of his wife who turned 101. Talk about hardy scots!! He would have been my g'ma's uncle so obviously it was kept because of the family connection. thanks for the extra info you have sent - I will have a good look at it this afternoon and see what I can sort out - it all becomes very intrigueing does'nt it and a bit addictive. thanks again. I'll let you know how I go.

Hi again Alan
I have had a good look at all the latest details and it seems to fall into place. Very helpful - especiall the confirmation from the death records that George Snr parents were Alexander Greig and Jean Fraser and also the names of Mary Milne's parents which I didn't have before plus their marriage in 1826 which seems to fit. The names on the shipping list are a bit out but I guess in those days mistakes happened regularly. If you ever happen upon a address for Alexander Greig and Jean Fraser I would love to have that so when I finally get to Scotland I can check out the area where they lived and walked. The main mystery now is the Mary Haugh Greig from the IGIrecord that Frances sent. It shows her born to George Greig and Mary Milne in 1851 - five years before their marriage. she also doesn't show up on the 1861 census with them. Maybe she is the mystery child left behind that my g'ma once mentioned.
cheers.

Hello Sandal1,

On FreeCen Aberdeenshire has almost complete coverage for the 1841 and 1851 census years, They are transcriptions but are very good ones. http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ It’s a good way to track people down before you pay for images on SP.

This looks like the previously mentioned Milne’s in 1841.
Piece: SCT1841/206 Place: Keithhall & Kinkell -Aberdeenshire Enumeration District: 3
Civil Parish: Keithhall & Kinkell Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 3 Page: 4
Address: Rashiebottom
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born
MILNE James M 35 Farmer Aberdeenshire
MILNE Martha F 45 Aberdeenshire
MILNE Martha F 13 Aberdeenshire
MILNE Mary F 10 Aberdeenshire
MILNE Isabel F 7 Aberdeenshire
MILNE Helen F 5 Aberdeenshire

This looks like the Milne’s in 1851.
Piece: SCT1851/206 Place: Keithhall & Kinkell -Aberdeenshire Enumeration District: 3
Civil Parish: Keithhall & Kinkell Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Keithhall & Kinkell
Folio: 165 Page: 1 Schedule: 1
Address: Rashiebottom
Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born
MILNE James Head M M 47 Farmer Of 22 Acres Aberdeenshire - Keithhall
MILNE Martha Wife M F 57 Farmer's Wife Aberdeenshire - Fyvie
MILNE James Son U M 21 Farmer's Son Aberdeenshire - Keithhall
MILNE Isabel Dau U F 18 Farmer's Daughter Aberdeenshire - Keithhall
MILNE Hellen Dau U F 14 Farmer's Daughter Aberdeenshire - Keithhall

You’d better check them yourself in case I’ve muddled them. Interesting address, Rashiebottom, same spelling both times, that’s very good and they have a farm of 22 acres.

Looks like there’s a couple of Greig families at New Machar on FreeCen but I haven’t looked at those. We should be able to pin down these locations.

What a great resource Alan!

Here are Alexander and Jane in 1841 from FREECEN-

Piece: SCT1841/227 Place: New Machar -Aberdeenshire Enumeration District: 3

GREIG Alexander M 55 Ag Labourer Aberdeenshire
GREIG Jane F 45 Aberdeenshire
GREIG George M 10 Aberdeenshire
GREIG Isabel F 7 Aberdeenshire

Looks like Alexander died at Inverurie in 1866.

This looks like Jane in 1881 and there is a death of a Jane Fraser/Greig at New Machar in 1884-

There is a death of a Mary Greig age 5 at St Vigeans in 1857. Might be worth a look even just to discount her.

Annette

Hello Annette,

I did a bit of scratching around looking in the newspapers for mention of the farms on the previous household/next household buttons but not finding anything useful, not even a Rashiebottom.

Things are rolling along nicely.

All the best,
Alan

Alan,

Burgh Muir is where Alexander and Jane lived in 1861. It can be seen just north of Inverurie on the old county map of Inverurie.

If you go to the old county map of Aberdeen (57 degrees 16'- 2 degrees 12') you'll find Gaucyhillock and Brownhills where they lived in 1851 and 1841.

If you type Gaucyhillock (Bungalow) and Brownhills, Aberdeen in to Google Earth you can see the area now.

Still can't see a Rashiebottom though.

Regards,
Annette
