Jean - I LOVE the wild card, once I;d read your post a few times and got my head around it I understand that Margaret Stewart's father is maybe Cuthbertson. How did you find the birth cert of the grandmother?
So exciting !!

Hi Pauline
Maybe concentrate on the Straiton one first, Pauline... she is kinda looking more interesting just now, but as the birth is going to be pre-1855, so before Statutory Registration, you may not get as much info as you might hope for in the OPR.
On the other hand, if the birth is indeed one where the mother is not married, which may well be the case, then there may be info to follow up at NAS after all, with a check of the Kirk Session records for the parish to see what was said, if anything, with regard to the child being born to an unmarried mother.
Best wishes
Lesley
Well that is looking good Annette- we don't want "our" one going off and marrying! She is still alive and single at Ayr in 1891

Forget NAS! You can do it all in Ayrshire!
Reference CH2/533
Title Straiton Kirk Session
Dates 1732-1928
Access status Not held
Access conditions This record group is not in the NAS. It is held in Ayshire Archives.
If you are going to Ayrshire anyway it makes sense to view the Kirk Session documents there, rather than on the PCs at NAS
This looks like the one you would need. (on the assuption we are on the right track AND on the assumption that the Straiton one is the correct girl - so hold on a wee while until we are a little more certain before working on your plan of attack for the local research!)
Repository Burns Monument Centre, Kilmarnock
Reference CH2/533/3
Title Minutes
Dates 1816-1860
Access status Not held

There are no records of a Mary Stewart born in Straiton on that yr but there were 3 mary stewarts but two were the same
1 , parents are william stewart and margaret tannock on 1st dec in parish of Dregham in Ayr
2,illegitimate daughter of James Stewart and Elizabeth Smith 22/02/54

Chances are you won't find it online. Like Lesley said you're best chance is to search the Kirk Sessions because she was illegitimate.ggirl wrote:Right have had a look for her birth.

One of mine was born illegitimate at Maybole in 1854. I emailed Ayrshire Archives and a very kind archivist looked at the Kirk Sessions for me and sent me the details(no charge). It was a while ago but it might be worth a shot if you can't get there easily.
Regards,
Annette
