Hi Rex,

In addition to the information given by Catriona, I can tell you that Ruthven is in Angus (aka. Forfarshire), close to the Perthshire boundary. It was not a part of Stirlingshire at any time as far as I can tell. I would say it is probably about 50 miles from the nearest part of Stirlingshire. It wasn't one of the over 60 parishes that were split across county boundaries and "tidied up" by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889 and moved wholly into one county.

I had a look at the parish names for Stirlingshire and none resemble Ruthven. So my best guess is that the wrong county was given on that census form.

Actually, looking at the record, I think it may say Bothkennar, rather than Ruthven. That would make more sense anyway, because all the other references I found for Michael say he was born there.

I've a few Hotchkiss relatives myself. Daniel Hotchkiss b 1822 (Bothkennar) married Jessie Thomson Henderson (Falkirk) 25/9/1850, Falkirk. (From 1871 Census, I believe Daniel was overseer at Valleyfield Colliery).

Children:-
Isabella 1850 (B Bothkennar) died 1924 (Eastwood, Glasgow) married (3/12/1872 Torryburn, Culross) Alexander Clelland b c1848
Daniel 1862
James 1864
Jane 1866
Jessie Henderson 1868
John 1870

The children were born in and around West Mains, Pit, Bothkennar.

I descend from Isabella and Alexander Clelland.

I have a photo from Larbert Old Churchyard with a Michael Hotchkis and Helen Walker with just the date 1853 and no further info. I dont know if this will be any use to you, but strangely Michael was not a common name in this area so there could be at least a connection. I am Kenneth Colin Stewart, g-grandson of Helen Hotchkiss b 21 Feb 1834 in Oban, Argyillshire, Scotland. I have reviewed your Hotchkiss website and it is really great. Thanks for the data showing Helen's ancestral line. It has added much to my data re: her family history.

Not sure what I can add to your search for additional info re: Helen but will give you what I have. By the way the 1841 census data for Helen is an obvious transcript error. It should have read Helen Hotchkiss, female age 7. Helen was born in 1834 as indicated above.

Helen married Colin Stewart b 25 Sep 1825 in Barony Parrish, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. They were married 31 Dec 1852 in Old Monkland Manse, Lanark, Scotland.

Helen and Colin had nine children as follows:

And lucky you, an 1855 BC.
Helen in 1861 is as born in Old Monkland, and as Glasgow in 1881.
