A Margaret Hoatson

Post by Jack » Wed Nov 30, 2005 2:34 am

Hi Legs,
To add to Andy's quite monumental effort!
There's a Margaret HOATSON age 20 at Crawfordjohn in 1851 (not with own family). No more details at present.
This marriage may be worth checking out? Daur Barbara has the middle name of THOMSON.
--
IF the dates below are correct, then mother Margaret had a rather busy day; what with a marriage AND a birth....

Jack wrote:Hi Legs,
And another quick question! - do you have Thomas NEILSON's DC?, ie the Thomas who married Elizabeth HOATSON.
What were the details?
Jack
Thomas died in 1892 his parents are given as Thomas and Mary Paterson, there are loads of submitted entries for this couple including Richard who appears in the 1841 census. The other children match too.

Jane/Jean/Jeannie (Thomson) Hoatson/Howatson's entry in the 1881 census says that she was born in Dumfries. Her Death cert (reported by son James) names the parents as Robert and Mary McKnight. A bit of massage is needed to find all the (extracted) children born to this couple, McKnight is spelled a few different ways!!

By the way Mary (Paterson) Neilson was also still alive in 1881:

Dwelling: Townfoot
Census Place: Crawford, Lanark, Scotland

Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Mary NEILSON W 75 F Leadhills, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Pauper

She died in 1882 in Leadhills, her parents are named James and Annie Dautson.

IGI has the following children born to James Paterson and Annie Dudson/Dutson:

1. MARTHA PATERSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 05 MAY 1815 Crawford, Lanark, Scotland
2. AGNES PATERSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 17 AUG 1803 Crawford, Lanark, Scotland
3. JEAN PATERSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 08 APR 1809 Crawford, Lanark, Scotland
4. ANN PATERSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 30 JUN 1811 Crawford, Lanark, Scotland
5. MARY PATERSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 21 MAY 1805 Crawford, Lanark, Scotland

Mary's husband, Thomas, died in the same place in 1870 his parents were given as Thomas and Mary (Neilson) Neilson

However it's perhaps more likely the parents were Thomas and Margaret Neilson for whom there are the following submitted children:

1. PAUL NEILSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 12 JUL 1803
2. PAUL NEILSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 14 JUL 1803 Leadhills, Lanark, Scotland

Gender: Male Birth: 09 APR 1808
4. ROBERT NEILSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 10 APR 1808 Leadhills, Lanark, Scotland
5. RICHARD NEILSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 28 SEP 1797
6. RICHARD NEILSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 01 OCT 1797 Leadhills, Lanark, Scotland
7. ELIZABETH NEILSON - International Genealogical Index

Once again I'm completely overwhelmed by all your hard work.

Thank you all so much. :D

More printing and pasting on my big board so I understand it all I think!

A couple of questions - most of the children seem to have been baptised within days of their birth, why so soon? Would it be due to the high infant mortality rate? Also Andy, where you wrote Thomas' parents were Thomas and Mary (Neilson) Neilson...does that mean that Mary's maiden name was Neilson also? If so could this be their marriage record? (from IGI, member submitted though so not necessarily reliable? And going with Margaret not Mary due to children list you gave, although there is a Thomas Neilson and Mary Neilson from Falkirk)
Thomas Nielson and Margaret Nielson married on 25th December 1793 at Wandell And Lamington, Lanark. Would their families be related and them cousins or something? :?

Thank you again.

Love
Legs

The 1841 census has this:

1841 Census

Piece: SCT1841/629 Place: Carluke-Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 3
Civil Parish: Carluke Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 3 Page: 25
Address: Clyde Street

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
NILSON Thomas M 55 Independent Lanarkshire
NILSON Mary F 50 Lanarkshire
FORREST Mary F 40 Female Servant Lanarkshire

Thomas could have been up to 59 and Mary up to 54, rounding down occurred on the 1841 census.

So it looks possible that this is Thomas parents, giving Mary not Margaret as the mother. However on further investigation this Thomas died in 1872 aged 89 and the wife was Mary Brownlie so NOT yours.

The Falkirk Thomas and Mary (Neilson) Neilson also had a son Thomas in 1814, too young to be Thomas father so it's looking more and more likely that a wee mistake was made on reporting the death and that the mother was Margaret Neilson. She may have been related to her husband but impossible to tell for sure without further investigation.

Richard was not a very common name at thetime but Thomas and Margaret (Neilson) Neilson had Robert and a Richard as did Thomas and Mary Paterson.

Infant mortality, money and proximity to a church all governed when children were baptised, there can be a great many years between Birth and Baptism. Your lot don't appear to be Catholic but Catholic baptisms are usually very soon after the birth.

Colthart - Hoatson

Post by Jack » Wed Nov 30, 2005 9:30 pm

Thanks for latest info Andy,
What i was clumsily trying to ask Legs was, is there is a proven link from the present day back to
Thomas NEILSON & Elizabeth HOATSON, via their son Thomas' marriage to Margaret RITCHIE?

You mentioned "Elizabeth Hoatson VERY probably had a brother, James, who Married Jean Colthart."
I'm sure you're right there, and below is another COLTHART - HOATSON marriage.
William & Jean COLTHART being siblings? Or at least closely related in some way.
Possibly this Mary HOATSON is the younger sister of Elizabeth? Her 1861 MC should give the answer.

Legs,
I think a few of your family names in the Crawfordjohn area are inter-related in some way.
There are 1851 censuses on your family i'll get as soon as i'm able to.
==
The William COLTHART who married Mary HOATSON may have married twice?
He was with Janet COCK in 1851, but looks like he's a widower by 1861 census (as aged 52).
Mary HOATSON appears to be single on the 1851 & 1861 censuses.

Censuses 1851 & 1861

Post by Jack » Fri Dec 02, 2005 2:03 am

Hi Legs,
Here are those censuses. I hope not to confuse you, like i have myself, with some of these.
There could be names on these censuses that may not be related to your own families. You've a lot of unravelling to do!
Being smallish villages it's very hard for the same names NOT to keep turning up next to one another.
A wee note; Crawford & Crawfordjohn are 2 different villages - abt 5mls apart.
Might be useful to get a largish scale map to understand the whereabouts of any places mentioned (those large AA or RAC road atlases are quite good).
I know you can now get the 1861 censuses on SP, just added some here to try and help.

Neilson family

Post by bethsam » Thu Mar 30, 2006 12:33 pm

:D
Hi Legs

I can't believe it. Last week I tried to find more descendants of Margaret Neilson and Thomas Neilson of the Leadhills as I traced my mother's line to them through their daughter Margaret known as Agnes born 1799. I found that in addition to sisters Mary and Elizabeth there was a Thomas, Richard, Elizabeth mark 2 and John. I had lots of luck and found marriages and children too. On the off chance someone had posted about Neilsons I searched this site and found these postings - wow.

Margaret Neilson 1799, married James Hope around 1825 and moved to Sanquar then Auchinleck, Ayrshire, sadly I found no record of this marriage and James died pre-1855. They had

Thomas Hope, born 1825 who married Margaret McCall in 1848 and they lived in Auchinleck/Lugar, Ayrshire. They had 8 children and many, many descendants that I've traced to Ayr/Fife/Greenock/Lanarkshire.

John Hope, born 1827 who married Veronica Liddle in 1855 again Auchinleck/Lugar. They had 4 children - one who provided 13 grandchildren!

Charles disappeared after 1851 census - possibly deceased.

Margaret who married James Clymmie/Clemmie/Clemie in 1854 again Auchinleck and had 6 children - this is my direct line and I naturally have loads on this one!

Legs 11 I'd be really happy if you could get in touch with me - she said in understatement.

Many thanks to the posters who helped as this was SO detailed it allowed not only Legs find relatives but me too - fantastic people.
