Ellis Island
I just remembered that I'd seen a way to find Ellis Island records where the image doesn't match the index. You can enter the reference directly and pull up the image.
Think this is it .

Andy,
You beat me to the post. I located the family late last night and was typing it up when you posted your results. Nice work Andy.
Sally,
You are correct. The http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ usually works great when the images don’t match up at the usual Ellis Island site. However, I searched for the Parkers using this site and did not locate any that fit the bill so I don’t believe they arrived in New York. Also in this case when I used the jewishgen site for the search of an A* Parker, age 0 to 5 (that’s what daughter Anna would have been based on census info), arrival year 1892 to 1895 two candidates came up. The image for the Annie Parker arriving 31 August 1893 aboard the Gallia does not match. This particular Annie arrived with a Mary Parker age 20 and a John Parker age 5.
In my experience I have found that Boston was a major port of entry for many Scots and English who planned on settling in the New England states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut). Those that came through New York tended to move on to other areas of the US. The Irish being the exception to the rule. Many of the Irish who arrived in New York in the mid 1800’s stayed right there. To make a living many of them joined the Army during the American Civil War and traveled up and down the East Coast at the expense of the US government. At wars end, when they mustered out, many who had survived settled in areas they had been to during the war, making for genealogical nightmare today.
A good number of Scots came to the US via Nova Scotia entering through the state of Maine.

Debbie and Andy,
Hold the presses. 99.99999% sure I found the arrival records of Mary Parker in 1893…at Ellis Island. And there is a bonus or two. As stated before by Andy and myself, the image listed on both the Ellis Island site and the jewishgen site does not match with the names of the Parker family we have been searching for. However, if one travels to the regular Ellis Island site and searches for Mary Parker, EXACT birth year as 1873, one will show up and it’s the Parkers I didn’t think were the ones we were looking for that I mentioned in my previous post. And as before the Original Ship Manifest image does not match. Annoying! Undaunted, I ventured out to search the thousands of manifest pages on the Ellis Island site….not! For some reason I have the greatest luck when it comes to searching the records. I wanted to locate the 1st page of this particular ships manifest so I started clicking on the “previous page” bar located above and to the left of the magnifying glass on the incorrect Original Ship Manifest page. I stopped to give a quick look at every 4th page. Guess who shows up on the 12th “previous page back”…page #397
Ship name: Gallia
Arrival: Ellis Island, 31 August 1893
Departing from: Liverpool and Queenstown
Name age sex Birth Occupation Destination
Line 64: Maggie McDade 26 F Scotland None Worcester Mass
Line 65: Lillie McDade 4 F Scotland Child Worcester “
Line 66: Francis McDade 0 M Scotland Infant Worcester “
Line 67: John Hutchinson ?? M? England Weaver New Bedford “
Line 68: Francis McDade 26? M Scotland Blender Worcester “
Line 69: Elizabeth McDade 20 F Scotland Spinner Worcester “
Line 70: Mary Parker 20+ F England Mother Worcester “
Line 71: John Parker 5 M England Child Worcsester”
Line 72: Annie Parker 2 F England Child Worcester
Debbie, were you aware that some of the McDades came to the States with the Parkers? Another name too...John Parker, infant. Looks like John Parher senior was already in the states when Mary arrived in 1893. Time to let you take this all in and re-group.
Happy hunting.

In reference to the mary aboard the Gallia I just checked as well and on line 070 is mary it states age 20 but could it have meant 26.. I know alot of the times the original manifests are hard to read..if she was 26 the age fits perfect thats puts her born 1867..John (husband)1868 Annie 1891 and John the son 1888. which matches the mass census ages. Andy You have done it!!!!! THank you so much!!!
Forever grateful,
Debbie

Mary's age
Debbie,
I read Mary’s age written on the original document as “20+”, twenty with a plus sign. Mary may not have been the one providing the information to immigration officers at the time. If someone else was, they may not have been aware of her true age.

Debbie/Andy/Bob
This one has got us all busy!
After Andy’s successful search (well done, Andy!) in the 1910 and 1920 American censuses I had a go at the English Parker side. Andy has definitely found the correct marriage for John George Parker and Mary McDade in Chorley in 1888 – that fits with the info I’ve found – but I don’t think that it is the right 1881 John Parker.
Because there are so many John Parkers, I started with the 1891 census in order to pick up John H Parker (aged 21 in 1910 so born about 1889) and Annie N Parker (aged 19 in the 1910 census so born about 1891) as the children’s ages were likely to be more reliable.
Here’s the family in 1891(with a very young Annie!)
1891 Census
RG12/3420
Reg Dist: Chorley
Sub Reg: Dist Leyland
Enum Dist: 4 – Folio: 73 – Page: 42 – Schedule: 242
41 Golden Hill
John G Parker – Head – Mar – 23 – Dryer and Finisher – born Cumberland, Carlisle
Mary Parker – Wife – Mar – 24 – born Scotland
John Parker – Son – 2 – born Lancashire, Leyland
Annie Parker – Dau – 3 days – born Lancashire, Leyland
The words ‘Cott Dy’ have been written next to John’s occupation – presumably standing for Cotton Dyer. Although the occupation itself is clearly ‘Dryer’ rather than ‘Dyer’ I would think it could well be intended as Dyer.
Leyland is very close to Chorley and is covered by the same registration district – use www.multimap.com to see this and also to see that Golden Hill is still there today – so the marriage in Chorley will definitely be the right one.
With the above census in mind - John's birthplace being Carlisle - I think that this is the correct John Parker in 1881:
1881 Census
RG 11/3814
Reg Dist: Bolton
Sub Reg Dist: Farnworth
Enum Dist: 7b – Folio: 56 – Page: 27 – Schedule: 331
100 Leach Street
Arthur Parker – Head – Mar – 41 – Railway Porter – born Cumberland, Carlisle
Jane Parker – Wife – Mar – 41 – born Cumberland, Carlisle
John G Parker – Son – Unm – 13 – Scholar – born Cumberland, Carlisle
William J Parker – Son – 8 – Scholar – born Cumberland, Carlisle
Thomas D Parker – Son – 5 – Scholar – born Lancashire, Barrow-in-Furness
Matilda S Parker – Dau – 2 – born Lancashire, Manchester
The names of John’s parents, Arthur and Jane, and his sister, Matilda, account for some of the names of John G Parker’s children in the 1910 American census.
And going back to 1871:
1871 Census
RG10/5221
Reg Dist: Carlisle
Sub Reg Dist: St Mary
Enum Dist: 8 – Folio: 41 – Page: 6 – Schedule 336
11 Barnton Place
Arthur Parker – Head – Mar – 31 – Commercial Traveller – born Cumberland, Carlisle
Jane Parker – Wife – Mar – 32 – born Cumberland, Kirkbank
John G Parker – Son – 3 – born Cumberland, Carlisle
Arthur W Parker – Son – 5 months – born Cumberland, Carlisle
Elizabeth M Hodgson – Serv – Unm – 16 – Domestic Servant – born Cumberland, Brompton
The 1891 census – see below – gives Jane’s birthplace as Kirklinton which is a village in Cumberland though there’s no way I can make this census say anything other than Kirkbank – which doesn’t seem to be a place anyway. Perhaps the enumerator either misread or mistranscribed it?
FreeBMD has a likely marriage for Arthur Parker:
1866 March quarter
Arthur Parker and Jane Porter – Longtown 10b 587
Longtown is a little way north of Carlisle so about right for the place and the following 1891 census for Arthur and family seems to confirm it:
1891 Census
RG12/3420
Reg Dist: Chorley
Sub Reg Dist: Leyland
Enum Dist: 2 – Folio: 30 – Page: 21 – Schedule 122
3 Peel Terrace
Arthur Parker – Head – Mar – 51 – Bleach Works Operator – born Cumberland, Carlisle
Jane Parker – Wife – Mar – 53 – born Cumberland, Kirklinton
William J Parker – Son – Sing – 18 – Bleach Works Operator – born Cumberland, Carlisle
Thomas D Parker – Son – 15 – Bleach Works Operator – born Lancashire, Barrow-in-Furness
Matilda S Parker – Dau – 11 – Scholar – born Lancashire, Manchester
Ann Porter – Visitor – Sing – 54 – Living on own means – born Cumberland, Kirklinton
Catherine Porter – Visitor – 42 – Living on own means – born Cumberland, Kirklinton
The two visitors – Ann and Catherine Porter from Kirklinton – must be relatives of Jane’s, perhaps sisters, and confirm Jane’s maiden name of Porter for the marriage reference.
FreeBMD and 1837online have only one possible birth registration for Matilda:
1879 Sept quarter
Matilda Sarah Parker – Salford 8d 18
So it looks as if your great-grandfather named his daughter, your grandmother, after the sister he left behind in England! She must have been not quite 2 when the 1881 census was taken, even though it gives her age as 2, but her age of 11 in 1891 fits perfectly with this birth registration. Salford is virtually part of Manchester so the place of birth would be right.
By 1901 Jane is dead:
1901 Census
RG13/3931
Reg Dist: Chorley
Sub Reg Dist: Leyland
Enum Dist: 2 – Folio: 27 – Page: 11 – Schedule: 67
5 Broadfield View
Arthur Parker – Head – Wid – 61 – Office Clerk – born Cumberland, Carlisle
Thomas Dickinson Parker – Son – Sing – 25 – Cotton Packer & Bleacher – born Lancashire, Barrow
Matilda Sarah Parker – Dau – Sing – 21 – Housekeeper Domestic – born Lancashire, Pendleton
Alice Marsden – Visitor – Sing – 51 – Nurse Domestic – born Lancashire. Leyland
This confirms Matilda as Matilda Sarah though her birthplace is a surprise as Pendleton, though still in Lancashire, is quite a long way north of Manchester. I can only assume that the family lived there for a short time after Matilda’s birth and that she thought she was born there. There isn’t another possible Matilda Parker registered in the timescale so the Salford one must be her.
Alice Marsden might be another visiting relative or, given her occupation of Nurse Domestic, she could have been living in and looking after one of the family. Perhaps Thomas was ill at this time? (Perhaps Thomas Jnr or Matilda provided the census info and got Matilda’s birthplace wrong?)
FamilySearch has a baptism for a Jane Porter in Kirklinton:
25 June 1837
Jane Porter
Parents John and Mary Ann Porter
FamilySearch isn’t functioning too well tonight – it keeps timing out and only wants to show bits at a time – but these parents also had daughters Ann and Catherine who match the 1891 census entry. The first child, Mary, seems to have been baptised 23 Oct 1831 so the following marriage would seem likely:
John Porter married Mary Anne Graham
02 Sept 1830
Burgh By Sands, Cumberland
Hope you can follow all this, Debbie. If you would like to send me your email address using the private messages facility on this site I can send you the images for all the above censuses, including the 1881 census. It’s always nicer to see the original image rather than to just have a transcription here.

Bob,
If you go back one more page to line 0037 on the manifest john parker is there age 25 on the gallia 8/31/1893..so they were all together. Now as far as the Mcdades on the ship.I have NO idea..thats how all this started in the 1st place. I was originally trying to get information on my Scottish or Irish ancestry with only knowing Mary Mcdade(married to john parker) was born in scotland and her parents I was told by my dad were Daniel Mcdade and Mary McDade(Mcmahon being her maiden name), whom were believed to have moved to scotland from Ireland..now that I have you thoroughly confused now!!!! When I search to try and find a Mary Mcdade born to Daniel and Mary Mcdade I come up with nothing. I know that usually on a birth certificate it would state the parents and where they were born..but I can't find it. I want to concentrate on that now that we pretty much know about the parkers and I can get with the mass archives and do some research. If I can find out if Mary Mcdade had siblings maybe we will be able to connect her to the McDades on the ship..well thank you again for all your help.
Take care,
Debbie

Hi Debbie
If you try McDaid on the IGI, that looks like your Mary in 1866. Also an Elizabeth McDaid born 1870 to Daniel and Mary .
best of luck
Sally
