Thanks for d date of David.
Was wondering, because I can't find anythin on John 1 is it possible that his name is not John but Matthew? Noticed that John 2 first son was named Matthew?? And if they follow tradition (and it looks like they did) Matthew would be the name of John 2 father?? Just a thought.

Re 1st born as Matthew
Hi Wanda,
Have you found a Matthew born before John (1846)?
These are John 2 & Isabella Muirhead's children as far as i know.
Taken from the IGI & censuses.

JOHN STEVENSON - Birth: 05 APR 1846 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
ROBERT STEVENSON - Birth: 26 JUL 1847 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
JEAN WALKER STEVENSON - Birth: 02 JAN 1850 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
MARGARET DONALDSON STEVENSON - Birth: 09 MAR 1852
DAVID - Birth abt 1854
MATTHEW STEVENSON - Birth: 03 APR 1858 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
ISABELLA STEVENSON - Birth: 24 FEB 1860 Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
SARAH STEVENSON - Birth: 31 MAY 1862 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

But in the 1841 census John 1 & Jean Walker had a Matthew (30) as oldest.
No guarantee though that he was the 1st born.
Nor that he is a son (but most likely he was).
1841 cens 622 Ed 227 p 6 (Barony - Milton)
John STEVENSON 58
Jane 59
Matthew 30
Agnes 25
John 20
David 18

Please mind that naming patterns weren't always strictly adhered to....

Hi Jack;
Don't ya just LOVE these Stevenson's, whaat a royal pain........At any rate.
I have a Matthew born to John and Jean (Walker) Stevenson born March 7,1809. First son of John and Jean (1). Thats what made me think that maybe John's fathers name was Matthew and not John. But as you say, who says they followed the tradition? Why make my life easy, right?
Anyway thanks for your help.

Hi Wanda,
IF Matthew born 1809 to John 1 & Jean Walker was their firstborn, and a naming pattern was used,
then it would be John 1's father who might have been a Matthew.
John 2's probable oldest son is a John, and again if a pattern used, then John 1 isn't a Matthew.
But John 2 & Isabella don't seem to have strictly adhered to a pattern.
Their 1st daur was named after John's mother (Jean), and not Isabella's (Margaret).
And David, the son of John 1, hasn't followed a normal pattern either.
His 1st son is David (not John), his 2nd daur is Margaret (not Jean).
The DCs of John 2 & his brother David have their father as John, and also on the 1841 census.
So it would seem rather doubtful that John 1 could've been Matthew.
