A quick search tells me there are three William Camerons who were born 1807 +/- 3 years and died between 1861 - 69 (the years you have mentioned). I take it you have ruled out these three as possible candidates? I'm not sure where they are situated I don't have enough credits to check any of them, one is in Midlothian, none in Lanark and none of them appear to be in Renfrewshire....

Sometimes though, a lady will say widowed when split from a hubby who is living elsewhere.

So you can only believe what is written to start with, but if other things "don't fit in", eg a DC can't be found,
then question the veracity of what's been said.
