My Granny has this on her Birth Certificate too & she said is was because they lived in a house which was behind the main road & the other buildings there.
Coincedentally Archibald Leitch is the name of my GGGreat-grandfather.Where is yours from & what was his occupation? There is a bit of a mystery with this Archibald who was from Abbey Parish & was a Freestone Quarrier. His daughter was born 1863 in Abbey Parish Mother Ellen Kerr/Carr.They never married but he certainly acknowledged her & the family were in contact with the Leitch's up to the 1940's.

Leitch

Hi Joette
Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry, the age is wrong for my Archibald. He was born in 1861 in Greenock, and married Margaret McNaught in 1880.
His parents were Dugald Leitch and Isobel Gillies. Dugald's parents were Dugald Leitch and Isabella Walker. Archibald was a carter. There are other Archibalds in the family but they are much younger, I don't know of any older ones - yet
Cheers

Hi Maggie

Does the information "omoa r craw rd sanitorium s" come from a certificate? If so is there the name of a town on the cert.? Perhaps you could upload the certificate to our galery here on TS?

Google came up with Craw Road Institution, PAISLEY? which appears to have been on the same grounds and under the same authorities as a General HospitaL at one time.

Best wishes

Craw Road was the Address of part of the Royal Alexandra Infirmary in PAISLEY. Probably was a san. at some stage. When I worked there it was Pediatric Orthopedics, ENT and Geriatrics.

The new Royal Alexandra Hospital is on the same site, Riccartsbar Asylum was around that same area too.

Maggie

Haven't got any more information to give you about Craw Road Sanitorium. Perhaps one of our Paisley members might know more.

There is however a site which lists the Poorhouses

http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/ ... d.html#ABD

If you scroll down to Lanarkshire, you'll find the Omoa Combination Poorhouse, which appears to have been in Cambusnethan. There are several photos of the place and some information, not all pleasant reading.

Hope this is helpful.

Best wishes

Excellent find Catriona and Wilma. I've never heard of it before.
Maggie,
If you are not close I'll have look next time I'm at 'The Mitchell'.
I'll need a wee bit more detail though, if you have it.

That fits as Omoa is a place somewhere near Motherwell from memory - see http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place ... p_id=16655

I have vague memory that the name derives from an overseas war, - Boer??.... , a bit like "The Kop" at Liverpool's football stadium (derived from Spion Kop, - the battle thereof in S Africa).
