Morning Jack,
I've not looked at Helen McAlister's marriage info yet. It's on my list for my next round of credit card bashing.
Do you know something I don't know
Certainly the names of the children from that marriage (Robert McAllister, Daniel, Alexander Mackintosh - that one is used in Robert McAllister's family - and what's the betting Catherine M Haliday is Catherine McEwan?), seem to be too coincidental....
Och, you've made me think about it, I'll be twitching now until I get on there.

I'd been wondering if Helen actually was "yours" - and that i hadn't sent you on a wild goose chase!
As i'd the chance for a quick look the other day, i took some brief details.
Thought you'd maybe already got the 1864 registered MC (married 31 Dec 1863).
But possibly had doubts because of Helen's parents' names.

pas - Samuel HALLIDAY, weaver & Margaret m/s SMITH.

Helen McALISTER (24) u/m --- of 45 Duke St, Glasgow.
pas - Donald McALLISTER, rope spinner & Catherine m/s EWING.
Wits - Robert DAVISON & Isabella McALLISTER.

Hellen MCALISTER, age 24 - this fits.
Father as Donald - but should be Daniel.
Father's occupation of rope spinner - this fits.
Mother's forename as Catherine - this fits.
Mother's surname as EWING - but should be McEWAN / McEWING.
[Daniel's 1877 DC says wife Catherine McEWING, who's own 1868 DC has McEWAN]
Witness Isabella McALLISTER - Helen's older sister? [the 6yr old in 1841, 16yr old in 1851, 24yr old in 1861]

But i'm not sure if the HALLIDAY family remained in Scotland - they are in the Calton on the 1891 census.
A quick search didn't show them in 1901, but maybe *wildcards* are needed.
Another odd thing is i couldn't see Scottish DCs for Helen or Francis.
I was hoping that, if Helen was Daniel's daur, her DC would give the correct parent details to confirm this.

Catherine's name has mutated somewhat, McCowan, McEwan, Ewing, McEwing.
I guess as Daniel ended up in the Poorhouse, there might be a relief app, but going by the info on his death cert that's where we get McEwing from....I've tried saying in it my best Weegie accent and there's no' much of a difference...perhaps it was just pronunciation.
I'll have a wee perusal on the 1901 census for E&W, there's free access on Ancestry at the mo, to see if the Halliday's did come south.
Quite where they got Donald from is another matter.
Was pleased to see that Isabella is the witness, means I know she didn't marry before 1863/64.
