Well you guys are truly awesome! Ashamed to say I’ve just arrived back from a day buying shoes (well you can never have too many) and find you’ve all been toiling away like stink, and I’m miles behind so please be patient while I catch up.

I’m so excited, and have to say I haven’t taken it all in yet, but just for starters I know off the top of my head this :

Margaret McGregor sister of Jean & Janet married Thomas Duncan in 1873. Another sister, Marion McGregor, died in 1884 age 16 or 17 and the informant was William Duncan, brother in law. Now I spent last night puzzling how the brother-in-law Thomas could get his own name wrong (duh). In my defence, I did search for another McGregor/Duncan marriage (ie Jean/Janet to Thomas’ brother William) but couldn’t find one – of course it’s now obvious why!

Also, the marriage cert of Thomas Duncan and Margaret McGregor in 1873 gives his parents as James Duncan and Agnes ??? – when I recorded it I plumped for Agnes Hannah, but I’ll post it to the gallery and see what you think. I’ll check, but I’m sure the parents of William Duncan who married Jean Frazer will be the same.

The death of Agnes McGregor nee Jarvie is the same Agnes of the marriage in Kilsyth – parents Peter Jarvie and Jean Gracie.

I’m not in any doubt that the Duncans and Marshalls and Frazers are mine. And the Robert McGregor and Agnes who went to PA are the ones who married in Kilsyth in 1879 – Agnes must have come back if she died in Banton in 1893. And they are the pair in Sarah’s 1880 census.

Only question now is if Robert McGregor is mine – remember the marriage cert with parents Duncan McGregor and Margaret Cleland. I can’t quite get my head round that one.

Is it possible that the story I got hold of re Robert McGregor and Pennsylvania actually concerned another family member (great-cousin type?) rather than great grandfather. And it wasn’t daughters of RMcG who turn up in Tioga, but nieces? Ma heid’s porridge, but I’m not shifting till I get it sorted. Hubby wants to go out for tea, but I’ll just bore him to death with it all while we eat, and see if I can sort Robert out.

I am bowled over by the results you three ladies have come up with. It’s a really brilliant example not only of teamwork, but the staggering generosity of TS members to give up time and resources (and SP credits). So a HUMUNGOUS THANK YOU to all of you. Let’s hear it for the girls!!

Yours humbly
Pinkshoes

I think I've messed up on the gallery thing but I'll wait and see what happens next.

:D :D And it's so much fun...!

Still wonder about Robert's parents though. There is a slight chance that they will be listed on his U.S. death certificate, if one could find it. But, of course, that Robert probably IS the Robert whose parents we already know... my head is spinning a bit here #-o

I'm afraid I can't find the Duncans after 1880 either-- Did they all go somewhere else? It's a shame that the 1890 census was destroyed-- a 20 year gap is too long :(

I'm counting on Pinkshoes having a brilliant revelation this weekend. Keep us informed!
All the best,
Sarah

Couldn't agree more!

Beats ironing anyway. I've been brought home a Feta cheese kebab and a bottle of wine  , so I'll raise a glass to PinkShoes and all descendants of Clan Gregor. (Did i mention my McGregor ancestors in Monzievaird ...... )

Cheers !

Hi guys - Mr Pinkshoes was thrilled to get the blow by blow account over tea at the pub :D Talking it through made me realise something that could be extremely important in all this

Sometimes I can be stunningly smart. Other times, two short planks come to mind.

Robert McGregor & Margaret Marshall had a son Robert (the one who was at Bennymire). He married Janet Paterson, and had several children, one of whom was a son Thomas - naming pattern further down the line continues this (which I'd forgotten till half an hour ago #-o ). I'd not bothered to get his birth cert yet. I've now just looked at it and his name is Thomas DUNCAN McGregor. Now then, I wonder where that came from :-k

More digging to do on the pedigree of Robert McGregor (hubby of Margaret Marshall) I think.

Best wishes

Imagine that! You'll be surprised to know that Mr. SarahND was also regaled with the tale over dinner 8) and was equally fascinated :D

... And when grandpasrock tried to tell me about the crisis following the resignation of the Belgian national coach* , he instead learnt a few things about Pennsylvanian miners, I can tell you.

* This only happened in an internet game not real life - thought truth be said, it makes no odds to me ...
